Windows 7 update with blank desktop screen and no access to previous desktop folder
I had to back out the windows update that was sent out last night or yesterday. What information do you need from my system to fix the update issue. After reboot and login, i saw a dialog with the error message about not being able to access the desktop folder. and so i had to restore to the 9/19/2012 restore point. I wanted to post this and see if others have seen a problem with this update or if it is only my system. The event log shows the following update was installed successfully with message: "Restart Required: To complete the installation of the following updates, the computer will be restarted within 15 minutes: - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2744842)"ilikecoding

Hi Ilikecoding I had problems with this update as well. After I installed it and restarted the computer as instructed, I encountered a BSOD and was unable to boot the computer. I ended up having to do a start up repair and that fixed the problem. Right now I don't have this update installed and the computer is working fine. Cricket

I had the same problem this morning when I started my computer, it would not boot, and system repair would not fix it. I restored to the day before this update, and it works fine now. I'm like you folks, I don't intend to re-install it until they find enough complaints, and find and fix the problem..

Hi, You can hide this update package in Windows Update Configuration if it cause unexpected issue for your machine. Or you can try to manually install this KB for test to see if the same issue occurs. This IS a bad patch. Thankfully no BSOD's, but it does prevent a number of programs from working. Java 6 based apps, mostly, will not recognize the Java client is installed. I have also heard other apps simply will not launch. Once KB2744842 is removed/uninstalled, all works fine.

I am so thankful that someone else is having this issue ( i dont think thankful is the correct word but atleast im not alone) After reaidng the replies I see there are others. My question is, Is this update necessary, I chose to hide the update but what exactly is the update for> Is there a way to avoid the update permanently or is there going to be issues later on if this is not installed. I don't understand much about computer but when the desktop issue arose I understood enough to do a system restore, but what is creating this issue? Thanks guys Aubrey
