Refer to this Microsoft article for resolution. If this does not help, download and install the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 and check if all is okay or not. Download and run the tool, it will say that it's "installing"...it's actually running the readiness scan at this time so you should let the installation run to completion. The KB article says it will appear to hang at 60% completion and I've observed this as well. Just be patient and let it finish. After the "installation" is completed, check that all is okay. If this does not solve your problem, please reset windows update components. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights. Hi, Win7 x64 sp1 - the machine had been off for awhile and auto updates were not working. Running "Windows Update" failed with red shield and "Cannot contact service" The clock was correct. The service was running - restarted it, changed it to manual, etc, all to no avail. Ran the Update Readiness tool, let a boot "repair" run overnight and a couple of "registry cleaners" (all bogus IMHO) In update settings: turned off update altogether and again ran "Windows Update" Update worked! best, PCG-Cornell
