Windows 7 update caught in loop
I have a brand new HP with windows 7--I went to turn it off last night and it said not to turn off power--it was trying to download update 4 of 52. I left it on--nothing seems to happen forever. Turning it off does nothing--control, delete
does nothing. It is completely frozen and I am not tech savvy at all. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance.

Try to login using the Safe mode of windows and then search the file windowsupdate.log and post the last 40-50 lines. It will help me to detect the cause of the problem.
If you are not able to login using the Safe mode, I recommand to you to proceed by a repair operation for your operating system.
Best regards.

Well Windows 7 also occasionally has the same issue.
You can use the solutions in this KB - 3 methods and I listed a little help for them below.
The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the computer restarts when you try to
install an update in Windows Vista and Windows 7
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358
Method 1: Start Windows Vista/Windows 7 with the Windows installation media, and then use the Repair feature

You can also do a Startup Repair from Safe Mode accessing the Recovery Options if you have them available
or use the DVD as above.

You can also do a System Restore by booting up with a Vista or Windows 7 disk.
Method 3: Use the Downloads at the end of this article - note versions for Vista x86 32 bit and Vista
x64 64 bit.

Once you are in Windows again I would run the Reset here as a precaution.

Hi,
In order to narrow down the cause of this issue and resolve it, please refer to the following steps. After finishing each step, please check the result again on the
Windows Update.
NOTE: Some third party programs can affect the Windows Update service. If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators
(programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing Windows Update later. Please understand that we are disabling
these programs only for the purpose of troubleshooting and we can re-enable these programs after we finish troubleshooting.
Step 1: Verify the relevant Windows Update services
=======================================
1. Click the "Start" Button, in "Start Search" box, type: "services.msc" (without quotes) and press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
2. Double click the service "Windows Update".
3. Click on the "General" tab; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic" or "Manual". Then please click the "Start" button under "Service Status" to start the service.
4. Please repeat the above steps with the "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" service.
You can also temporarily stop these services, restart the computer, and then start these services again. If any service is missing or cannot be stopped or restarted,
please let me know.
Step 2: Rename the Windows Update Softwaredistribution folder
================================================
This problem may occur if the Windows Update Software distribution folder has been corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename this folder. Please note that the folder will be re-created the next time we visit the Windows Update site.
1. Click "Start", in "Start Search" item, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter.
2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window:
net stop wuauserv
ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SD.old
net start wuauserv
3. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose "Save" when you are prompted to save the file. Type "register.bat" as the file name and
choose Desktop from the left panel as the location.
4. Refer to the Desktop and right click the register.bat file, then choose "Run as administrator".
5. You will see a DOS-like window processing.
If the issue persists, to clarify the issue and provide more accurate troubleshooting steps, please assist me in collecting the following information.
How to capture a screenshot
======================
1. If there is any error received, please press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard.
2. Click the "Start" Button, type "mspaint" in the Search Bar and Press Enter.
3. In the Paint program, click the "Edit" menu, click "Paste". Then click the "File" menu, and click "Save".
4. The "Save As" dialogue box will appear. Type a file name in the "File name:" box, for example: "screenshot".
5. Make sure "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF)" is selected in the "Save as type" box, click "Desktop" on the left pane and then click "Save".
How to collect the WindowsUpdate.log file
================================
1. Click the "Start" Button, type "WindowsUpdate.log" (without the quotes) in the Search Bar and Press Enter. We will see a file named "WindowsUpdate.log"
2. Now click on the "File" menu and then click on the "Save As".
3. From the left panel, click "Desktop" and click the Save button.
