Windows 7 ultimate backup issue
Hello,I get the error Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\Podcasts. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)). This error seemingly started after a windows update as I noticed a Podcast library is new. I like windows 7 backup feature. Hopefully Microsoft can correct this in a future update? I am a programmer by trade so I know these things sometimes happen.

It wouldn't hurt to check the file system for errors:1. Click the Start orb.2. Click Computer.3. An Explorer window will open and you will see your hard drive listed as Local Disk (C:).4. RIGHT-click on Local Disk (C:) and choose Properties.5. Click the Tools tab.6. In the Error-checking section, click the [ Check now... ] button.7. UN-check the [ ] Automatically fix file system errors checkbox.It will tell you whether it has found any disk errors. If it does report errors, go through this process again and this time check the [ ] Automatically fix file system errors box in step 7. I believe you will have to reboot your system to complete the check and repair operation.For what it's worth my system goes through backups just fine, so there's hope.-Noel

Hi Jimmy, Please let us know which program generated the Podcasts first. You issue can occur if the library is reporting the path of this folder incorrectly and hence the issue. As a workaround, please do the following:1. Change backup settings2. Select the same target device3. Let me choose4. Expand the user nodes from the treeview to see which user has the "Podcasts" library.5. Deselect the library.6. If you want the contents of this library to get backed up, please select the actual path of the folder (ex: C:\Users\John\Podcasts) from the Computer section in the treeview.7. Save settings.This will exclude the problematic library from your backup settings and the next backup should be GREEN. Please try this workaround and let me know if it works for you.Good luck!John

The only 2 things I can think of that created the new library are either a windows update or a Zune update (sorry I don't know exactly which one created the podcast library under "libraries" as both happened). I will remove the podcast from my backup as you suggest. I did check for disk errors as Noel suggest and it didn't find any.

If you don't use the Podcasts library, you can delete it permanently, then try to make a backup again. Of course, you can make a copy for the library if you want.Good luck! John

I am having the same issue. The latest Zune update added the Podcasts library, and windows backup seems to be having a problem with it. The latest Zune update also added several network locations (I store my music on a networked drive) to my Music library which backup also has a problem with (it won't back up network locations. Interestingly I had this same problem with Windows 7 RC with a different library. I had thought it was fixed until recently.

Ditto for me. I also did not have the issue until installing the latest Zune update, which is when I noticed the Podcasts library.

Same for me - this happed after I installed the Zune Update (sometime after 4/25/2010). It's a problem - research it! Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\Podcasts. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002))

I am having this issue too. Except I DO have Podcasts library and I DO want it backed up. I am also getting another file error: Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Users\Administrator\Contacts. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002) Is there a way just to re-initialize all the files that Backup tries to look for? BTW, I did do a disk check and found no errors.

I don't know how active this thread is but I had the same problem but I fixed it. When backing up to an external USB drive, I would get this error: Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\Podcasts. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)) I have a Zune 8GB and Zune HD and the latest Zune software, for what it's worth. To resolve this, I added a folder named "Podcast" in "C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\" and I was able to run a backup successfully.

your fix did work but at first it didn't because I called the file "Podcast" the second time it worked I changed the name of the folder "Podcasts" and it worked!! thanks for your imput and don't forget to type that "s" at the end.

It is great that people are coming up with workarounds, but Microsoft should fix this problem at the core. We should not have to create workarounds for something as important and basic as Backup functionality. The same is also the case for all the warnings with regards to offline file backup. I know that the files are not being backed up and I should not have to be warned about it every time. Microsoft should also fix the "Last backup: Never" issue. There is clearly a disconnect between the backup that just happened and the status that the system has with regards to this backup. I have seen workarounds with removing public files, deleting backups etc., the situation is that users should never have to do this. Microsoft -> please continue to focus on ease of use and robustness in the most important parts of your OS.

It's been over a year now.

This also worked for me. The actual Zune podcasts directory was already checked under C:\users\myname\music Thanks for the work around.

Holy batman, here it is July 13, 2012, on my new fancy Dell XPS with 2TB, 12GB, Intel i7 and patched Windows 7 Professional, 3TB GoFlex USB3 drive......all that and this silly bug is still happening. I guess no one a Microsoft or Dell actually use what they sell.

Here's a suggestion: Change the settings to do a System Image backup - that works perfectly - I do one every night. I've restored such backups with 100% success. But does that back everything up? Or would it be microsoft mystery. LOL, I have been an Ubuntu Linux user for the past 6 years. I honestly thought buying a Dell XPS with the latest greatest and Windows 7 would do a decent job. It seems so mickey mouse...can't get a backup on default settings out of the box. I have now started the backup procedure at least 5 or 6 times in the past 8 hours trying to get 1 good backup. Microsoft must have no shame. To make it even worse, Microsoft can't fathom a simple log file that actually yields information of value. Now they have entagled log info in "etl" files. This is the most ridiculous operating system on the planet. I'll bet someone in Redmond was worried their department was going to be cut so they dreamed up ETL to justify writing a million lines of code to store information in a manner that people who need it can never get it. Good lord I can't get details of what backed up, what didn't. Jeesh!

It backs up enough to, with your system booted up with your Windows disc or a system recovery disc you've made, perform a bare metal restore of the volumes it says it's going to back up. In the example above, it can recreate the entire System Reserved and C: partitions - every file on C: is included. I respectfully think your advice is harmful. Two obvious drawbacks to only doing system image backups are: If you have non-system partitions, they will not be backed up.You cannot control how many backups you keep. And lastly, it's way more complicated to restore single files from a system image backup than from the data file backup.

If you want to back up volumes/partitions other than those listed after "Include a System Image of ...", just check the boxes next to those drive letters. I don't know what you mean by "You cannot control how many backups you keep." You can easily set up an external drive and tell Windows to delete old backups when it fills. If it's much larger than the volumes you're backing up, it will hold quite a few. If you want to save an old backup, you can swap out the external drive if you want, and put it in a vault. It can then be used to restore data at some time in the far future. More complicated? Hardly. Have you not used the Restore Previous Versions feature? Bear in mind I'm answering a thread in which people are having trouble using the default "user files backup" scheme because of bugs, and proposing an alternative. System Image backup just works.
