Windows 7 turns off randomly
I have windows 7 running on both my laptop and my PC, my laptop seems to be running fine, no serious issues. But recently myPCturns offwhenever it feels like it. It seems to take less and less time before it turns itself off, so much so that at some points I can't even log into windows before it turns off. When I say turn off I do not mean shut down it's almost like it just looses power and everything goes black. I tried leaving it for a while and then doing a system restore but it turned itself off halfway through and now when I try turning my computer on it gets stuck on a blank black screen when it should be displaying the log in screen. It started about a week ago and has got worse, it may have coincided with an update. I have a sneaking suspicion that this issue is hardware based, but does anyone have any suggestions on what this may be and if there is a way to fix it?BTW my PC is a HP Media Center m8080a Processor type Intel Core2 Duo Processor E6300 1.86 GHz, 2MB Advanced Transfer Cache, 1066 MHz Chipset - Intel 945G Chipset Standard memory - 1024 MB (updated with 2 extra 1024 MB RAM sticks a while ago, brining it to about 3GB) Memory type - DDR2 Internal drives - Internal hard disk drive / 250 GB Hard disk controller - Serial ATA 3G hard drive Hard disk drive speed - (7200 rpm)Thanks in advance

Added note I am sitting here now after goint into the BIOS setup menu and watching the CPU Temperature rise about a degree every second, so this does not seem to be windows 7 based. It got to about 94 degrees celsius and then turned off. So obviously this is an overheating issue. Any thoughts on why this is happening now? Is there anything I can do to fix this, or is my CPU stuffed?

Check to see if your CPU fan is spinning. Might need a new CPU cooler.Tim Comes

OK, I took off the CPU fan which was spinning fine, but found a heap of dust in there. Blew it all out and now it doesn't seem to be turning off/overheating. It seems the housing for the fan is slightly broken, possibly from the overheating but it doesn't seem to be causing any problems for now. My only issue now is that when starting up the computer after showing the windows logo it's supposed to go to the log in screen, but instead all it shows is a black screen with the mouse cursor on it. I am pretty sure this is because it turned off halfway through a system restoreI did before I worked out it was a CPU overheating issue. I get stuck on the same black screen if I try and load up in Safe Mode too...Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Boot with the DVD and try doing a repair on it or might try doing a reinstall over the top.Tim Comes

It's all ok I worked it out myself. Just for future reference if anyone else has this problem I used the system restore option after boot loading the Windows 7 RC instalation disc. I'm so relieved, for a second I thought I'd lost a whole computer. PS Would the overheating have done any damage to the CPU, or did the turning off prevent this from happening?

It was shutting down so it would not cause damage and is usually set to shut down at a lower temp than it can actually handle so should be good. I would still look at getting a better after market cooler the stock coolers are usually kind of weak.Tim Comes
