Windows 7 turns off my display if the computer is inactive.
Windows 7 Home Premium turns off my display (dell 30" TFT 3007WFP) after a few minuites if the computer is inactive. If I press the internet button on my keyboard then the display comes back on. If I run a video in media player minimised on the taskbar then everything is fine. If I change to monitor to a 25" Hanns G then the monitor dims instead of going off. I am using a Dell 430 XPS with GTX470 850Watt PSU, all power management is set to max performance, with nvidia 260.89. Display works fine if I put the GTX 470 and PSU into a HP ML115 with Win7 using same video drivers. Any ideas ?

Any chance you could read what I typed. Both monitors work fine on a HP ML115 Computer with the same PSU and Video Card. The issue is not with the 25" Hanns G monitor but with the Dell 30" monitor. I suspect a Windows 7 Video card bug with the X48 chipset. If I run media player minimised on the taskbar then everything is fine, it is only on idle that the dell 30" monitor turns off on the XPS 430. I would like to know if there is a way to disable dimming of the monitor in Windows 7 Home premium. Maybe it is the dimming signal that is turning off the monitor.

Windows 7 has several awesome features. I recently came across this feature in Windows 7, and according to this you can set to dim the display after certain period of times (1 minute or above) while the system is idle. Different time interval can be set for while on ‘Plugged in’ and ‘On Batteries’ mode. This feature can save lot of power in windows 7 and increase your battery performance. You can find it underthe Change settings for plan, which can be accessed via Power Options. Battery mode in Windows Vista Windows 7 dim the display option Windows 7 access plan settings Hope this helps! OK, I have an update on the problem, I switched graphics cards from the Inno 3D GTX 470 to an EVGA 470 and that fixed the problem. Last week I decided to upgrade to a 1536MB Asus GTX 480 and now the problem is back. My Full Spec is XPS 430 QX9650 Extreme 8GB DDR3 100GB Revo 2 Pci Express SSD 1536MB Geforce GTX 480 Dell 30" 3007WFP If I use the computer then there is no issue, but if I simply read a webpage and the computer idles then after 10-20 seconds the monitor will switch off. Then I have to open a webpage via my keyboard (internet button) to make the computer not idle and bring back the picture. If I run a video on the taskbar and the computer is doing work then there is no issue. All power management is disabled, I firmly believe that windows is trying to dim my monitor and is instead turning it off. I have even disabled the monitor in Device manager as per a suggestion. Help would be appreciated. And I know that I can fit the EVGA GTX 470 back in to solve the problem but that is not what I am prepared to do. I would like to try and fix this problem.

One thing I can't seem to find is... what is considered "inactive"? I am trying to figure out what the best power setting I should use if I want to perform an overnight maintenance task such as full system scan or backup. The simple fail-proof option would be to turn off all sleep/hibernate features, but I still want the computer to turn off (or at least go into lower power state) after those tasks are completed. Thanks.

Finally Solved - after 6 hours. I changed every component until finally I switched the processor to a Q8300 then it worked. I then fitted a QX6850 and all problems have been solved.
