Windows 7 system image backup failure
I have a new PC with Windows 7 on it (<1 month old) and have just got around to setting up the backups. The system image backup fails with an error message 'The backup application could not start due to an internal error; The specified service does not exist as an installed service. (0x80070424)'.I ran the sfc system file scan which said 'Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them'. The CBS log file is over 4 Meg and difficult to make sense of.Any ideas?

Hi, I would like to confirm if you can backup other files except the system image backup. To troubleshoot this issue, please perform the following steps: Go to Start, input services.msc in the Search box and then press Enter. Check if Windows Backup service is Started and set as "Manual". If not, change it to Manual and click Start to start it. You can stop and then restart it, reboot to see the result. If issue still exists, please check the following key: 1. Click the "Start" button, type "regedit" (without quotation marks) in the "Search" bar, right click on the "regedit.exe" found in the list and then click "Run as administrator". 2. Navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\wbengine 3. Right click the wbengine entry on the left pane, choose "Export", select "Desktop" in the "Save in" box and type "backup" (without quotation marks) in "File Name". Click "Save". Please Note: The backup file is on the Desktop and named "backup.reg". We can simply restore the registry by double-clicking the "backup.reg" file. 4. Right click to delete the wbengine key on the left pane. 5. Then download this file, rename it to wbengine.reg and double click on it to import to Registry. 6. Restart the computer to see if the issue can be resolved.Vivian Xing - MSFT

Hello and thanks for they reply. When I first got the PC I temporarily set it up to backup some docs I was working on. That backup still appears to run weekly. Two things I've noticed, (1) The system image backup error message comes up twice, ie I have to close the pop-up twice, and (2) I cannot change the settings of the backup already in place, if I click on 'Change Settings' it briefly shows a horizontal bar and then the same error message pops up.The Windows backup service shows Started and Manual.I looked into the registry as you suggested but there is no wbengine entry. The list goes ....Wanarpv6, WbioSrvc..........,.Item 5. I'm not sure where this file is to download it otherwise I'd have given it a go.I hope the above is helpful.Eric

I thought that the missing wbengine was a bit strange so I looked further on the internet and came up with this http://forums.techarena.in/operating-systems/1266882.htm I downloaded the file, imported it into the registry and the backup now seems to work.Eric
