Windows 7 stopped connecting to Windows 2K server after months of working. Vista & XP still fine
My network is Workgroup based with shared resources on a W2K server. A dozen XP machines, a couple Vista and a couple W7 machines all were working fine together. A month ago one of the W7 machines stopped connecting to shares; and yesterday the second W7 machine stopped. Internet is still fine. The W7 machines come up with the Username/PW request, but nothing works (existing connection, local/server user, local/server admin). There are no duplicate IP addresses, restarted all machines and routers. I just noticed that I can get to the W7 machine shared folders FROM W2K, but I cannot get to the server from W7. Any help would be appreciated. Windows 7 Ultimate edition. Created new shares, new user accounts, flushed the DNS, in a "work" network, file sharing/discovery/etc is on, AV & firewall is off, burned some incense, all that. No luck. ping ok, fsc clear, chkdsk ok. 'net use' access, nope - still tries to collect a name/pw that is never right. Does not connect on restart or hard boot.

Hi, Firstly, please adjust the sharing settings on the Windows 7 client: 1. Go to “Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings”. 2. Under “File sharing connections”, select “Enable File Sharing for Devices that Use 40 or 56-bit encryption”. 3. Under “Password protected sharing”, select “Turn off password protected sharing”. 4. Save the changes above If it persists, please also try the following on the Windows 7 client: 1. Click the Start Button, type "gpedit.msc" (without quotation marks) and click OK. 2. In the "Group Policy" window, double click on "Windows Settings" under "Computer Configuration". 3. Double click on "Security Settings"-> "Local Policies"-> "Security Options" 4. In the right panel, double click on the "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level", please select "Send LM & NTLM Responses". 5. Click Apply and OK. Then reboot the computer and see if you can access the share folder on the Windows 2000 computer from the Windows 7 computer with UNC (\\computer\folder or \\IP Address\folder). Hope this helps. gpedit.msc is not available on Windows 7 Home Premium, so I have a couple of questions: 1) What is the alternative to gpedit.msc? 2) What update broke this? It used to work fine two weeks ago and then suddenly, poof! all gone. Anything to do with EOL for W2K?

Anything to do with EOL for W2K? hi vmoralesduarte I am using Windows 7 Enterprise edition, no problem with gpedit.msc, I can work with it like in earlier version by typing gpedit.msc in start menu through searh column. I think it's also no problem with Win 7 Home Edition, can you make sure again please.
