Windows 7 standing by indefinitely
Hello, I have small issue with my Windows 7 32-bit ultimate. When I want to put my computer into standby (S3 or STR-mode), the screen goes black, but the fan is still working and other LEDs look like the computer is still turned on. Usually it should all go off and only LED on should be the moon (for the sleep). The computer stays on and I have to turn it off by a power button. Is there any way to find out the reason of system hang that occured before forced shutdown? Thanks for any response...

Troubles putting the computer in sleepmode can have very different causes. BIOS and hardware drivers are the usual suspects, but faulty or non-supported hardware can cause issues too. I would recommend using the powercfg command line tool provided in Windows to troubleshoot this. MS has a nice tutorial video that explains how and when to use the tool to troubleshoot this issue. For example powercfg -a outputs all possible sleepmodes on your computer, and more important why some modes are not available. Also, examine your eventlogs: there might be logs about what went wrong!MCSA/MCTS/MCP

I've looked over the event logs and found out that tha unexpected shutdown was caused by these error codes: 0x0000009f (0x00000003, 0x85eb95d0, 0x82f68ae0, 0x85611bd0). There was also a memory dump, but I the file couldn't be found.... By the way, I initiated the unexpected shutdown when the hang occured.... I also found that on every startup there's a warning, that the built-in fingerprint sensor driver wasn't loaded correctly, so I'm going to uninstall the fingerprint sensor, restart and try standby mode. I'll post here how it turned out.

OK, here are some news: So far I've found out that the fingerprint sensor has nothing to do with the issue. I installed Driver Checker utillity and it showed me about 4 outdated drivers, so I installed some, except the chipset drivers (which throw an error during installation). Current state is that almost all my drivers are up to date and there's no possible reason that I can find for my computer not to go into sleepmode. Now I'm going to pay attention to the powercfg tool and BIOS. Then I'll post here ASAP. Thanks again...

BIOS looks fine, and powercfg is indeed precious tool. I used it and found some reccomendations for me concerning power settings... I fixed some but it's still not working... When I run POWERCFG - REQUESTS it shows me that there are no requests. What should I do next?

You can try the following steps to narrow down the cause: Step 1: Device Clean Boot ================= 1. Click Start, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the Search bar and press Enter. 2. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers". 3. Right click on your sound card and then click "Properties. 4. In the dropdown menu of Device Usage, please choose "Do not use this device (disable)" and click OK. 5. use the same method to disable other dubious hardware such as: internal modem, network card and CD-R drive. Please note some devices such as video adapter are not available to be disabled. Then, restart the computer to check if the issue persists. If so, try step 2: Step 2: Clear "Allow this device to wake computer" option ================================================= 1. Click Start, type "cmd" (without quotation marks), right click on the "Cmd.exe" in the search result list and select "Run as administrator". 2. Type "powercfg –devicequery wake_armed" (without quotation marks) in the open window and press Enter Key. Please do not copy this command directly and pay attention to typing it accurately. 3. Click Start, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search bar, and press Enter. 4. For example, expand "Networks adapters", double-click the network card, switch to "Power Management" tab, uncheck "Allow this device to wake computer" if this option is not grey. Please repeat the steps above to uncheck the "Allow this device to wake computer" option on other devices on the list, such as USB device, mouse and keyboard. 5. Reboot the computer and check this issue again. Vivian Xing - MSFT

Thank you Vivian for your response, I'll perform these steps and write back what I've found. While I was waiting for replies, I noticed an interesting symptom. When I invoke computer shutdown and close the lid, it sleeps without any hangs (closing the lid should trigger sleep mode, but it usually hangs). I've experienced it by accident when I tried to shutdown my computer and from impatience closed the lid. I suppose it's because system shutdown terminates some driver background sessions or any other services / programs running in background and preventing computer to sleep. Thanks again and I think it will take me a few days to try it out, so please be patient with me. :-)

Hi, I'm sorry for not writing sooner. I was just too busy to write. I've tried to disable some devices (step 1) but it didn't fix the problem. I've also unchecked the boxes (step 2) with no change. And powercfg lists nothing.... I'm sorry but it seems that your solution had no effect.....
