0 I inserted a 2gb usb memory stick into my computer running windows 7 - a message popped up immediately saying "do you want to scan and fix udisc 2.0 (E)" then Scan and fix (recommended). The following day I plugged the memory stick into another PC running windows XP and nothing happened, I tried it on a work PC and nothing happened. I have even tried it on the original PC it was scanned on and nothing happens when its plugged in. It doesnt show up under devices connected to the PC. Ive even been into the Device manager (disk management) and looked under the USB controllers and it doesnt show up on the list. My mouse and printer show up. The USB sockets on the computers are working as Ive connected other memory sticks and they work fine. So it appears by following windows 7 recommended "scan and fix" Ive completely lost all the work on the stick. what is odd is that soem of the files on the usb stick open when its connected to my TVs USB socket - but this is no help whe I need t access the work Is there a solution to accessing the contents of the memory stick when no computer (Ive tried 4 PC's) recognises that its been connected and it doesnt show up under devices

Does the light on the USB flash drive flashes after you insert it into USB port on a computer? If so, the hardware may be not damaged. In this case, I suggest you insert the USB drive into the original computer you scanned on, if it does not recognized, reinstall the USB controllers and then check the result. Use the Mouse ============= 1. Click "Start", type in Device Manager the Search bar and press "Enter". Click Continue if necessary. 2. In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the "Host Controller", click "Uninstall" and click "OK". 3. Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers". Use the Keyboard ============= 1. Press "Ctrl + Esc" to open the Start Menu. 2. Type Device Manager in the Search bar and press "Enter". Click Continue if necessary. 3. In Device Manger, press Tab and use "Up" and "Down" to move the highlight to "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". 4. Press "Right" and expand it. 5. Press "Down" to move to the first item and press "Delete" to remove it. 6. Repeat the step 5 and uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". Thanks, the USB stick doesnt have a light on it unfortunately but the fact when its plugged into a TV it brings up the file names means it is not dead. The problem comes down to computers recognising that its been connected. Really odd how windows 7 scan and fix option has resulted in no computer even the original computer not registering it as connected. I have used a couple of other memory stick and the same scan and fix comes up but I just choose "no" and they open fine so appears the windows 7 scan and fix has made some changes to it so its not recognised anymore. Your response mentioned deleting the USB controllers in device manager, I will try this and get back to you.

Hi Arthur, I had the same issue with my usb drive. I've tried anything that have been suggested here and in other places: diff computers tv scan for changes in the device manager uninstall and install the usb host changing the power management of the usb hub nothing helped. the led on the drive is constantly on but nothing is happening when i plug it in. any other ideas?

Hi all, Same problem! I'm USING all brands of PC with different operating systems, but I´ve never before had such problem. After having bought a new Acer Aspire Intel Core i5 4GB Ram 500GB HDD with Windows 7 Ultimate updated with SP1, in just 6 months I lost 2 HDD 500GB: an internal drive (Western Digital) and an external (Seagate Iomega). Both have suddenly become unreadable and no longer recognized by any type of computer. The Iomega external hard drive has worked 11 months without any problem with several computers with Windows XP SP3; with Windows 7 only 3 months and died. The internal hard drive from Western Digital has survived 6 months. Of course Acer says it is not possible and certainly the inner disk must have suffered some kind of mechanical or electrical shock, and so even if they failed to explain the problem (losing 300GB of work), I lost the warranty on the hard drive Western Digital. For exceeding the limits of time (12 months) I lost the warranty (as well as a 400GB backup) of Iomega external hard drive. From 1 month now I have a new internal hard drive Seagate 500GB and a new external hard drive LG (Toshiba 500GB )..... and now what happened ???????? The external drive is not recognized by Windows 7 (the BIOS recognizes it), then trying to be as fast as possible, I had to turn off the PC (because Windows 7 could not safely disconnect the USB device) and I connected the external disk to a desktop with Windows XP SP3, which did not recognize the hard drive. But after many attempts, different softwares and a lot of research on Google I discovered that the "Master Boot Sector" had disappeared and that the disk was full of bad sectors. How can this happen 3 times in so short time? Hardware problems? I am sure it is not. After the first (serious) problem I uninstalled Windows 7 (7601) losing his license (of course) and I've installed OpenSuse 11.4 Linux using VMWare virtual machines (Windows XP SP3). After 6 months WITHOUT problems, due to the fact that I use for 90% Windows-compatible programs, I reinstalled Windows 7 ... in only one month the same problem appeared again! Does anyone know why this happens (and throughout the world, just oddly does not happen in Microsoft)? The Acer PC hardware is too weak to Windows 7? USB technology is too backward for Windows 7? The 500GB hard drive technology is very poor? The Wonderful Windows 7 has a few small problems? Or is it always my fault? With Windows 7, I noticed three things: 1. the same hard disks become much hotter than with XP or Linux 2. the same hard disks spin at high speed for much longer 3. USB devices are not switched off when safely "disconnected", the read heads violently park when the cable is unplugged or the PC switched-off. Listening the sound of the hard drive working with Windows 7, it seems that the arm moves the read heads violently and not silently and smoothly as in Linux and XP. Some ideas or help? The situation is costly and at any time in danger of losing much of my work! But why the hard disks become irrecoverables?
