Windows 7 registry cleaner
Hello,
Is there a free download software for a free registry cleaner for Windows 7?
Here is my issue I am using Starz Play for movies and everytime I try to play the movie download it says the Windows media play is not working and would click help and said that I have registry errors. After futher research I found out I may have errors
that need to be fixed, but I dont want to pay an arm and a leg for one of those programs.

What specific registry errors does it say you have? Running a registry cleaner can be very dangerous, if it misbehaves and removes something it shouldn't, it could trash your whole system, in which case you'd be watching
nothing. I'd be very leery of anything that tells me it won't work because I have registry errors.
That said, if you still want to proceed, Ccleaner, found at http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner, is fairly well regarded for cleaning up and optimizing a system.

Thanks for the input. I really should say it gave me registry error and I apoligize for that. When I go into the media player files itself and double click the file to play it tells me that windows player had expirenced an unexpected error. Click ok or
help, and when I do that it says that there is a codec error. I am sorry if this seems to be a difficult problem. I was hoping I could get some answers on here. Any feedback would be helpful.

Do not run any registry cleaner. If you do, you are looking for
trouble.
Registry cleaning programs are all snake oil. Cleaning of the
registry isn't needed and is dangerous. Leave the registry alone and
don't use any registry cleaner. Despite what many people think, and
what vendors of registry cleaning software try to convince you of,
having unused registry entries doesn't really hurt you.
The risk of a serious problem caused by a registry cleaner erroneously
removing an entry you need is far greater than any potential benefit
it may have.

Let me point out that neither I nor anyone else who warns against the
use of registry cleaners has ever said that they always cause
problems. If they always caused problems, they would disappear from
the market almost immediately. Many people have used a registry
cleaner and never had a problem with it.
Rather, the problem with a registry cleaner is that it carries with it
the substantial risk of having a problem. And since there is no
benefit to using a registry cleaner, running that risk is a very bad
bargain.

Ah, a codec error. That makes much more sense. What type of file are you trying to play? .avi, .mkv, .mpg, .flv or some other?

Ken,
If registry cleaning programs are all snake oil, what do you call that dumping zone called "The Regisrty"?
It was designed ages ago and hasn't been "fixed" to prevent blot, deframentation and other annomilies that cause Windows to boot and run slower and slower with time.
Blot ... tons and tons of entries in there put in by Microsoft and non-Microsoft programs that never, never ever get accessed let alone used. It just wastes disk space and slows the processor down dealing with the mess.
Fragmentation .. instead of "upgrading" the registry to automatically compress and defragment each time a restore point is done, it just gets messier and messier until your system gets so slow you have to "clean" install Windows (and all your apps etc.).
Sorry but as a Microsoft MCSE supporting Windows since Windows 386, I've seen my share of Microsoft "snake oil" to lose a couple years off my life supporting Windows. Please, please, please ... for Windows 8, throw out the whole mess and start from scratch.
You (and us users) will be glad you did.

That's not my experience at all.

That's not my experience at all. I've run Windows 2.0, 3.0, 3.1. 3.11,
WFWG 3.11, 95, 95B, 98, 98SR2, 2000, XP, Vista, and now Windows 7, and
have never reinstalled any of them. With a modicum of care, it's
never necessary.
Moreover compressing or defragging the registry is unnecessary. It uses
so little disk space that compressing is meaningless, and since access
to it is random, defragging is similarly meaningless.
Sorry but as a Microsoft MCSE supporting Windows since Windows 386, I've seen my share of Microsoft "snake oil" to lose a couple years off my life supporting Windows.
Then your experience is, again, the opposite of mine. I've done lots
of Windows support, and haven't seen the problems you talk about.
Please, please, please ... for Windows 8, throw out the whole mess and start from scratch. You (and us users) will be glad you did.
Me? I have nothing to do with Windows 8 (or whatever it will be
called). If you think I work for Microsoft, you are mistaken.
And I am personally very happy with Windows 7. I think it's the best
release of Windows.

Hi Jeremiah W.,
Apparently the videos are encoded for security. You need the
Starz Player and meet these minimum requirements.
Broadband connection with a minimum download speed of 700 kilobytes per second or higher
Windows Media Player 11 or higher Windows version 7 Macromedia Flash Player Version 9 or higher (Get Flash Player here:
http://www.adobe.com/)
Visit your provider and download the player.

Personally I would install K-lite Codec Pack - during the install it searches for any damaged codecs and removes them with your permission
