Windows 7 randomly cannot share with XP
Windows 7 randomly stops sharing with XP machines. Win 7 x64 build 7600. After I set up sharing on the domain, everything works fine. Anyone with permissions can access shares using an XP machine. However, randomly (I cannot track down the cause). Sharing stops. The permissions, settings, etc. have not changed, but no one can get access using an XP machine. They can ping it. Using another win7 machine the shares are still available. I have found that a restart resolves the issue--until it happens again. Again, the share settings have not changed. I have turned off UAC and even tried sharing to everyone. Sharing with everyone allows XP users to share again without a restart of the Win. 7 machine. However, I need to be able to limit access to the shares. Can anyone tell me how to resolve this random loss of permissions?

Hi, Can the Windows XP machine access Windows 7 machine normally when the issue occurs? Since the issue occurred randomly and it disappeared automatically after restart, we can consider that the network connection is fine. At this stage, you can temporarily turn off firewall and antivirus on both Windows XP and Windows 7 machine for a test. If issue still occurs, please perform following steps to capture a log file. Collect the Netmon file ========================= a. Download NetMon3.3 from the following website and install it on the computer http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=983b941d-06cb-4658-b7f6-3088333d062f b. Launch NetMon3.3. c. In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.3 window, click Create a new capture tab d. In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window. e. Then, switch to Network Monitor, press F5 to start NetMon. f. Try to access the Windows XP machine again. When it failed, go to step 7. g. Go back to the NetMon window and press F7 to stop the NetMon. h. Press Ctrl+S to save the Netmon file named test. Then please upload to SkyDrive (www.skydrive.live.com ) and share the link to me. Thanks, Novak

Hi, Thanks for your help. I think I have found our error: The Net. Monitor capture description reads: SMB SMB:R; Negotiate - DOS OS Error, (8) NOT_ENOUGH_MEMORY Searching for this error turned up this thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itpronetworking/thread/c27b647b-1f35-4df9-a389-be0bfee931a8 It looks like I'm not the only one seeing this issue. Restarting the "server" service as was suggested in the thread works for me as well. Do you know if there is a solution available? Thanks, Mordecai

This is not a known issue and I did not find any direct solution. If the server service is stopped automatically, it can occur by incompatible third party programs, group policy settings or corrupted system files. At this stage, I suggest we you turn off firewall and antivirus program on the problematic machine for a test. If the issue still occurs, please upload the Event log to the Skydrive ( www.skydrive.live.com ) and share me the link. Collect Event log ========================= a. Click "Start", input "eventvwr" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search bar and press Enter. b. Right click on "Application" on the left frame, choose "Save Log file As"; in the pop-up window, click to choose the Desktop icon on the left frame, input "app" in the "File name" blank, and then click save. c. Right click on "System", with the same method, save it as "sys". d. Locate the two saved log files on the Desktop and upload them. Thanks, Novak

http://cid-8773a5b55902a105.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/sys.evtx http://cid-8773a5b55902a105.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/app.evtx From the logs you will see nothing was happening for about an hour. Then when I tried to connect to the share from an xp machine the "server" service died. No firewall, no virus scan, no UAC. Thanks for your help, -Mordecai

Please also try the following steps: 1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in Open box. Press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue. 2. Please expand to Computer, click "File" menu and click "Export". 3. Please name the file as "RegBackup" (without quotation marks) and then save it to the C:\ drive as a backup. Note: In case we need to undo the modification, we can double click this RegBackup.reg file to restore the registry key. 4. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\LargeSystemCache 5. Highlight the LargeSystemCache key and set the value to 1. 6. Please also locate the following key: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\Size 7. Modify the value of the Size key to 3. Then, restart the machine and check whether the issue persists.

I made the change on Friday, its now Thursday. Since the change was made, the issue has not occurred again. I will continue to watch for it, but I suspect the registry changes have resolved this issue. Thanks for all your help, Mordecai

We have confirmed that the registry settings also fix the problem. Sure wish Microsoft would publish an official article regarding the issue and the fix.
