Windows 7 problem blocking FTP Client
I'm hoping somebody here has a suggestion or solution to my problem, I feel like I ain't getting anywhere with other tech support providers. I use an FTP program (Coffeecup) and I've always used it successfully on my previous computers. I got a new Samsung Netbook three days ago and installed coffeecup but it just doesn't connect to any of my Servers. The log-in details have been entered correctly I have tried a few online FTP clients and I can access them that way. It's not my firewall, I've deactivated the firewall and tried it and still no joy. I even did a virtual screenshare with Samsung tech support that lasted nearly two hours and he went over my firewall settings over and over, and he concluded that it wasn't the firewall. I've checked with my service provider (Orange) and they insist that they do not block any ports. It's not coffeecup because I've downloaded a selection of other FTP programs (Filezilla etc) and I have the same issues with them all. so what do I do? I've been in contact with all these people more than once and they always point me in the direction of each other. I feel like I am hitting a brick wall. its a new machine, why should it have problems like this? anyone, please, I'm asking for any support whatsoever. And please don't tell me to phone Orange or contact Fasthosts or Get in touch with the manufacturer... they all keep telling me the same thing.

A couple of possibilities. With this being a new machine, are you sure there is not a third-party, OEM crapware firewall installed? In some cases, you may have a trail of McAfee, Symantec, etc. that may come with a firewall application that is automatically turned on. In some cases, these will deactivate the built-in Windows firewall, in others, not. What Im trying to say is that you may actually have several firewalls installed and not know it (I have come across an OEM system that actually had threewith all of them being activated). Have you tried using a different port number? See if you can set your server to respond to port 55123 for example (or any port above 1024) and try to connect then. Another troubleshooting method is to open System Configuration and select Diagnostic startup. Reboot and see if you can then use any FTP clients. If so, you definitely have a third-party application issue. Yet another option is to download and run MSFT Network Monitor 3.4 (this is a nice tool to have anyway). You may be able to investigate packet loss and narrow down why port 21 is blocked. Out of all of the above, I would guess there is some OEM provided, third-party package on your new Samsung system that is causing your issue. Some OEMs are worse than others.

Hi Darien. thanks for the input, but I'm still having no joy. I did a search for any other firewalls and even though the program itself wasn't there, there was a Norton file in one of my folders. So I downloaded and ran the Norton Removal Tool. To get rid of anything 'Norton' that is present on my computer. again.. nothing changed. I guess the only other option is to change the port to 55123 like you suggested. I'll try that next. And that in all honesty, will be my last resort. I've tried everything else to death. I have no idea what is going wrong here, I'm near to tears! seriously. I'm getting so frustrated with it, even moreso when I keep getting replies telling me that there is nothing wrong and the fault lies elsewhere. thanks again for your suggestions Darien. I'll keep everyone posted on my results with the server port changes.
