Windows 7 periodically dissapears from network neiborhood
With have several Windows 7 Pro x32 Eng systems. Users use local network to find and share files. The computers are divided in different workgroups. Periodically windows 7 dissapears from browsers. Even opening the network locally on problematic computer - it is not seen, just other computers are seen. The system may be accessed by its name without problem. Only is that users are used to find the other's users computers by browsing. Network discovery is turned on, firewall is turned off, LLTD is active, the network is marked as "Work network". After a restart of the system - it appears in network for others, but after a time - it dissapears again.

But on your WinXP machines you can install the "Windows support tools" for WinXP, which contains the utility browsta.exe. This has to be started from the command-line. There you can look what PCs-lists are maintained by the browser service and even display the status of your Win7 browser service remotely. This helps a lot in trobleshooting browsing problems. One further thing to check are the Netbios settings - this has to be enabled for network browsing to work. You can check that via ipconfig -all. Further if there is a WINS server in the network see, if the PC is registering correctly with the WINS server. Lastly look if your NICs are set to NOT "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in the Power Management settings. Wolfgang

Hi, Please understand the networking issue could be caused by many factors such as slow network performance or third party software. You can enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP for testing. 1. Go to "Control Panel -> Network and Internet ->Network Connections". 2. Right-Click on the connection and choose Properties. 3. Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Version 4" in the list. 4. Click Properties, and then click Advanced. 5. On the Advanced TCP/IP settings windows, go to "WINS" tab. 6. Under NetBIOS setting, click "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP", and then click OK. Also, check the following registry. 1. Click the Start Button, type "regedit" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box and then press ENTER. 2. Navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBt\Parameters 3. Right click the Parameters entry, choose "Export", select Desktop in the Save in box and type backup in File Name. Click Save. Please Note: The backup file is on the Desktop and named backup.reg. We can simply restore the registry by double-clicking the backup.reg file. 4. in the right pane, delete the NodeType and DhcpNodeType entries if these strings are present. 5. Restart your computer and check if the problem disappears. Meanwhile, I would like to say since you can access the problematic PC via its name or UNC without any problem, please don't worry about this kind of issue. Thank you for looking at this. Browstat from windows 2003 support tools package doesnot work under windows 7 x32. Running browstat on server which holds WINS service and manages the group does not give any error. Runnig browstat view 1 workgroup lists the currently running an visible computers, except the windows 7. If the windows 7 system is restarted, the above command includes and the windows 7 too for awhile, after which the computer with windows 7 dissapears again. Running iptables /all shows that NetBios is enabled on the adapter. Also the windows 7 computer is registered in wins service database. nblookup gives the write data. "Allow to turn off the device" does not affect anything. The ethernet adapter is not turned off anyway, because the windows 7 computer is pingable and can be accessed to its share by typing its name directly in address bar.

Thank you. NetBIOS over TCP/IP is always enabled. I've made the registry modification (NodeType was not present at that key) and nothing changed. I don't mind the hidden computers, I always youse direct access, but the users whant to browse thru network like this and open shares just clicking on computer names.

I've found the problem. After disabling all sturt-up non-microsoft services from msconfig and running them one by one, I've found that on Windows 7 the remote control service Dame Ware Mini Remote Control some how interfere with the system being seen on network. Changing this service to start manualy only when needed and stopped after using resolved the problem.
