Windows 7 offline files - 2 mins to go online
Windows 7 clients, 2008 R2 file servers. Every time a user reconnects a network cable (e.g. they went to a meeting and came back to their desk), it takes 2 minutes (normally in fact 2 mins and 9 seconds) for the computer to realise that the server is available and go online, and then sync the files. There is not even a go online button before this, as the computer doesnt know it can go online. This is rather a long time, does anyone know a way of improving this? How does the client detect that the server is available? Please don't refer me to the 'What's New in Offline Files for Windows Vista' link on technet, this is the only article that goes into any depth around offline files, but it doesnt explain this behaviour. I can reproduce this in our lab. Sometimes it will go straight online e.g. a HyperV guest, if you disconnect/reconnect the NIC, but this is not the same as removing a physical cable it seems. Disable/enable the NIC taks 2 mins using a VM or physical machine. Thanks

Hi, Based on my research, this is by design. You may use the Process Monitor to monitor the behavior when it will detect the network status is online. Also, another tool which can help you analyse the situation is Network Monitor. Download Process Monitor at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645 Download Network Monitor at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=983b941d-06cb-4658-b7f6-3088333d062f&displaylang=en Thanks for understanding. No, we are still troubleshooting this. In some environments this happens immediately.

Hi, Did you find anything useful via Process Monitor and Network Monitor? I also tried this in my testing environment, the Offline file detected it less than 20 seconds. Please boot the computer in Clean Boot to determine whether the 3rd party software affect it. Update: Vanilla win7 machine takes less than 10 seconds after connecting a cable to realise the server is available and go online. With the Symantec Endpoint client 11.0.500.333 it takes 2 mins and 10 seconds. The SEP security team are planning on updating the version to v.11.06a. Apparently SEP is only fully compatible with Win7 after this version, which is pretty poor given how long Win7 has been out. SEP is also causing all sorts of other problems on servers and desktops. Thanks
