Windows 7 nslookup incoorectly appending domian name
When using NSLOOKUP on a Windows 7 Enterprise machine which is joined to a domain, it incorrectly appends my domain name on any DNS query, such as:
c:\>nslookup
Default Server: ns1.mydomain.com
Address: 4.3.2.1
> server 8.8.8.8
Default Server: google-public-dns-a.google.com
Address: 8.8.8.8
> miscrosoft.com
Server: google-public-dns-a.google.com
Address: 8.8.8.8
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: miscrosoft.com.mydomain.net
Address: 64.99.80.30
>
After attemping everything I know of, I am posting this. Does anyone know how I can fix it so that the DNS query will just give me what I am looking for?
> miscrosoft.com
Server: google-public-dns-a.google.com
Address: 8.8.8.8
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: miscrosoft.com
Address: 64.99.80.30

The behaviour of nslookup is correct. Just append a dot (.) to your dns query. That will prevent the client from appending any connection specific domain names. Think of the dot as a address terminator.

Thank you. I guess it is one of the new behaviors of WIndows 7. Never noticed it in XP and Vista.

No. This is how Xp and Vista work, also. You probably were not joined to a domain in the past or you are now using a WINS server which appends your domain or you have entered something into your System Properties/"Computer Name" as a primary DNS suffix.
