Windows 7 network adapter problems
Hello, I have just made a new computer and installed Windows 7 and the graphics card drives without problem. I connected my tower to my home internet modem, the O2 wireless box Thompson 4 with a regular Ethernet wire which I know works as I've plugged it into my laptop and am using it now. When I plugged it in, my tower didn't find a network despite the green light coming on in the Ethernet port. When I opened internet explorer for the first time it couldn't connect which i expected as O2 requires its own drivers, but when I go to install said drivers O2 tells me there’s something wrong with my network adapter and gives very little advice to remedy the problem. The windows help suggests I may need to enable the adapter but it says to click View network connections then Right-click the network adapter icon, and then click Enable but there is no icon. I have checked the wiring and it is in correctly, I have no idea what to do. Thanks.

You installed the drivers for your video card but didn't install the drivers for your network adapter. The light just means that the hardware link is good, not that Windows is correctly set up. Find out who makes the adapter and what model it is then go to their site and get the proper drivers.

It sounds like your system is unable to find any network adapter. To confirm this, you can go to the Start Menu, right click on My Computer, and choose Manage. From there, you will see the Device Manager on the left side. If you highlight that, and view the resultant pane in the right, any issue categories will be expanded. You can also check for anything under the Network Adapters category in that middle pane for something like "[Manufacturer Name] Network Connection". Assuming that there will be an issue category, you will need to locate the driver for that adapter. If the motherboard came with a CD, you will most likely find a suitable one there. The other alternative would be to go to the motherboard manufacturer's site from another system, and download the driver from there after providing the model. That will also give you the latest version as the packaged disc most likely has sat on the shelf for a while. Please note that those instructions will allow you to use the onboard adapter with an Ethernet cable. If you wish to use the Thomson device, you would need to locate the media that came with that. Hope this gives you some insight into the issue.A+, Net+, Sec+, MCP, MCTS, VCP4
