Windows 7 latest update hangs machine
Over night, Windows 7 downloaded and installed the latest critical patch (MS09-034), however I think somebody at MS got the patch wrong, becase instead of fixing the bug, it actually stops me from doing anything on the machine. Good job MS! How do I know it's this patch? Well I do a system restore to the point prior to this patch installed and it works. I've since turned off automatic updates, and it works, as soon as I let the machine install that patch, the same thing happens. After loging in, the bottom taskbar is inactive, "I just get that stupid circle that spins" and can't do anything. Althoughother apps that open seem to be ok.The only thing that is active on that taskbar is Google app, which lets me launch IE and Icanhit the web.I can't even ctl+alt+del, it brings up the taskbar, but that hangs also. The only way to resolve this, is with a system restore and that seems to only last a short while, since (even though I asked not to install updates, it does). I'm using the latest release of Wndows 7, if I can get the dam thing to work, I could post the version number. Updates installed are as follows: KB973346, KB977636, KB972260, KB970855, KB970421 and the Office SP which doesn't seem to be an issue. I restarted in safe mode and remove these updates and don't seem to have the issue.

"Release Candidate" - it's an evaluation version not for sale.

What's RC version? The Release Candidate (RC) version of Windows 7 is phase of secondary testing after the beta to find any serious bugs and issues that can make the Operating System not work properly. The RC version of Windows 7 is Build 7100. I hope this helped. =)Evandela

Hi, everyone: All the above mentioned updates were pre-RTM, all of them installed fine on my machine and don't give problems on RC. I can't see why you all are discussing a difference between RC and RTM, as if that would be the OP's problem. - @kram, don't you have messages in the Event logsthat could be helpful?Mobile AMD64 3000+, VIA Apollo K8T800 chipset, 1 G RAM, ATIRadeonMobility 9700, 20x DVDRW, C:XPSP3 (55G),D:WIN7 (25G),F:DATA (250G)

There is nothing in the event log at all that relates. The Behaviour is strange. Why does the bottom taskbar hang as well if I try and click on the desktop. Ctrl-alt-del also doesnt respond after it opens. Other windows that are already openoperate without any issue.Removing these updates resolves the issue. I hate how MS want to charge you a fee to discuss their issue with them.

You can remove KB970421 without problems, that's only a test update and may be responsible for the issue.I don't know what KB970855 is, I don't have that. The others are security updates for IE8 and Killbits, and a compatibility view update for IE8. I wouldn't remove these three (KB973346, KB972636, KB972260), and I don't think they are the cause of your problem.Mobile AMD64 3000+, VIA Apollo K8T800 chipset, 1 G RAM, ATIRadeonMobility 9700, 20x DVDRW, C:XPSP3 (55G),D:WIN7 (25G),F:DATA (250G)

KB972260 is a security update for IE8. I think there is some kind of a problem with it.On my Server 2003 R2 machine, Windows Update keeps wanting to install it, even though the Windows Update history shows it successfully installed (twice).Since it is already installed, I have hidden it to prevent these annoying messages. On the other hand, I do not have this problem on my other machines (Windows 7, Vista, Server 2008, and Server 2008 R2).

It is freely available for those who wish to test their systems for the upcoming Windows 7 retail product. It should not be used as the only OSon your primary, production system. As a beta product, there is no official paid support available, but Microsoft makes these forums freelyavailable forusers to discuss, report, and help resolveissues with the current build of the beta. For the Windows Update issues, uninstall those updates. Set your Windows Update Preferences to notify you when updates are available, but not download or install the updates. This will allow you to see if the problematic updates are appear again. If they do appear again, simply right click each update and select the Hide Update option. This will effectively prevent those updates from installing or being offered again. The RTM build of Windows 7 is the final release. It is a retail product and is available for purchase at most online retail websites as well as at theMicrosoft Store - Windows 7Itwill be generally availablefor purchase on October 22, 2009.It is alsocurrently available tothose who have a current paid Technet or MSDN Subscription for evaluation purposes.Hope this helps.Thank You for testing Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP

There is a issue i came across when i did a download of the latest fix, where it was installing some security patches and IE8 patches. All was going well until the install bar which show how much has been installed stop. it doesn't say how much has down loaded, but as an estimate it would be around the 90%. May that something that MS should look at in future. Any way i tried to close down window 7 and it came up with the message install update. Since it was late i left it finish its install. The following morning when i came down stair i found it still installing. I shut it down and re-booted and found the same piece of of update was shown ready to downlaod. Is this a dodgy update that MS needs to have a lot at? OS: Window 7 7100. PS before anyone asks if this is been used as my main system the answer is yes, because it best to give MS 7 a thougher testing.

MG Bob, was it the KB972260 update that it wanted to re-install?
August 10th, 2009 11:49pm

Not sure... will have to check. All i know is that it stated security fixes and updates to IE8, when it tried to install it got to around 90% and then stopped and was like that for a good hour. My wifi was still connect to the internet and i was able to view the internet without any problems. when i tried to shut down it stated that it need to install an update an would close down, when it had finished it updates. I left all night and it was still the same the following morning.

This is the cumulative udate for internet explorer and was provided for IE6, IE7 and presently for IE8. It was provided for the standalone version ofIE8 for vista. Why the remote code execution issue this updateaddreses is notpatched with this later build of internet explorer 8 released after the standalone and it's co-updatemakes me curious. Certainly it may have bean a security threat to IE6 but an odd tradition it is to provide the same animalthe sametime after windows is installed on XP, vista and now of course windows 7. Aside from all of this rambling of mine a way to test if your updates are functioning is toremove one of them (of course by all means not a critical one) and see if windows updates promptly offers you a brand spankin' new one shortly thereafter.

I'm using the latest build, 7600. and since 2 nights ago i'mexperiencingthe exact same problem. it's like the Aero fails somehow for no apparent reason (no not responding message, no error message, just the circling busy indicator) and for an unknown amount of time, until it goes back to normal after a while. why?! CTRL+ALT+Delete works, but task manager itself is not responding, so there is no way to see what process is not responding.
August 22nd, 2009 7:29pm

I am having similar issues. EVERYTHING hangs "not responding" since the latest Windows 7 update. I can't get anything to work. Eveything was working fine before the update. It installed as I turned it off on Monday night and then Tues, NOTHING works properly. I don't have a restore point on this computer as it is new to me. Help. Is there a way to UNINSTALL the latest update?
