Windows 7 laptop does not shut down when network hard drives are on!
My HP Pavillion DV-6 with Intel i7 and Windows 7 Home Premium 64 has issues shutting down. It goes on the shut down screen and sits there without never shutting down. Same for Hibernat. If I leave it long enough it might throw a Blue Screen and a memory dump. It seems that the problem only happens when I am connected to my home network and my 2 Western Digital Hard disk drive (NETWORKED) are on. If I have them switched off it seems to always shut down. I have updated all drivers, done endless clean boots / safe mode etc. to try and figure out which service I should disable to avoid this issue. There are so many services and I don't know which one it is that causes the trouble. When I do clean boot it also works - then if i start turning on services it is really difficult to work as there are so many dependencies among the different services. Any idea which service should I try and disable? Any setting for the network drive to make sure the PC shuts down which I am missing? I have been on the phone and chat with HP, on forums etc - and it is driving me crazy!! Help!! :)

Hi MassiG, First, what type of WD hdd's are they, World Book, My Book, hdd's in another computer? The externals have firmware updates. Second, 1. Click “Start”, type “%SystemRoot%\Minidump" (without quotation marks) in “Search” bar and press “Enter”.2. Go to your Desktop, right-click on it and create a new folder named "Dump".3. Copy all the memory dump files (looks like [Mini092008-01.dmp]) in Minidump to this folder.4. Right-click on the Dump folder, click "Send To", and click "Compressed (zipped) Folder".5. Upload to SkyDrive. Then post the link to the public folder here for assistance in reviewing the .dmp files.

Hi, In addition, please also try the following suggestions: 1. Perform a Clean Boot to check the result. 2. Restart the machine in Safe Mode with Networking, and then connect to the network drive again. Can the computer be turned off successfully now? If not, does the blue screen pop up? If the issue persists, please collect the minidump file for research. Thanks, Novak

Hi the WDC hard drive is a My Book World Edition 1TB with its own media server. I actually have 2 drives one is an older WDC World Edition and one is the new one which had the media server incorporated. it seems that the issue only happens when the newer one with media server is on. The dump is here http://cid-563058e8661abdd2.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Dump Thanks for your help

Hi, I checked and found this update for the World Book Elite. http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=wdsmartwareutilities The firmware is what I would update first. If your model is a different version and for the older version check here for a firmware update. Check here, select the appropriate model and select the vcd and firmware, then download just the firmware. http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?level1=1&lang=en This solves a communication problem with the internal interface and Win 7. You are getting a driver_power_state_failure blue screen. So, are you allowing the computer to sleep, connected to a PPP or VPN, or have the older external storage device connected via firewire? It seems that the firmware update for the external storage devices will help. If you are connecting the older device via firewire, try updating the driver for that from device manager. Let me know if the firmware updates help. We can go from there.

Hi Mr Ch, Use the second link from the previous post and select your specific model. The download the firmware and apply. If the software enables the media server features, then apply that if you have still have the problem. Please post your result. Thanks and good luck.

YES - it worked:) Now I just need to find out how to get my XP computer into this workgroup thing so I can access my old files and resources. How can MS create a network system that doesn't network?

Good news, Mr Ch! Now, exactly what worked? The firmware update? Vote a post helpful it provided the answer. It will help others find the answer. Ok. Try Start>Help and Support and type network sharing in the search box and click the magnifying glass. Look for a result titled: Networking home computers running different versions of Windows. That should have the solution for you. If not search TechNet or start a new post for that problem. Best Regards.

yes - the firmware update worked with the WD worldbook - no more shutting down issues. I am trying to give helpul vote but MS is frustrating the effort Thanks for the other advice - btw I discovered 99% of the problem is Norton - it blocks ALL computer to computer links except those already made for file and print sharing BEFORE you start Norton. Of course I started it as soon as I opened the new computer... so I have just restored the factory condition and hev NOT started Norton.

Mr Ch, The Windows 7 firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials provide good protection, use limited system resources, and MSE is free. You must manually update the definitions or schedule a scan with an update for automatic updating. Disable Windows defender when you do install anti-virus software. I don't recommend running without any security software.

MassiG, You had the start of the answer with the clean boot. The link from Novak Wu's post provides the process of elimination. Clean Boot The other issue(re:blue screen) is that a device is not waking from a sleep properly. As this only happens when you are connected to the external drives, it would point to a network adapter or the drives (which won't sleep), possibly the security software. In the properties of the wireless adapter try unchecking "allow the computer to turn off this device". Let the computer hibernate or sleep, with the external drives connected, wake it, and try a shutdown.

Tried the clean boot with networking. Have the latest firmware on the My Book. Other things that fail when I try them while on the network are a registry scan, a system restore from a previous point in time. Still cannot shut down if I'm on the network (all machines have Win 7, the other 4 machines all shut down fine). Pavilion DV3T won't shut down.
