Windows 7 intermittent connectivity issues.
Howdy folks. I'm posting in this thread out of complete frustration in the hopes that a higher up tech support person will see. I have an extremely frustrating issue with my internet and Windows 7. They loose their internet connectivity intermitently. DNS lookups time out. Pings to 4.2.2.2 time out, etc. Pings to "gateway.2wire.net" will fail because it can't reach the DNS server. A Ping to 192.168.1.254 (gateway ip) succeeds. I also have a laptop running the latest version of Ubuntu. It experiences NONE of these problems. I have actually DISabled the windows firewall service in both the Vista and Windows 7 machines. I have also completely disabled the ipv6 service in both as well. Even going so far as to completely disable both according to this MS kb article as simply unchecking the ipv6 box under the adapter properties doesn't fully disable ipv6. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929852 ETA: No AV on either machine. I feel the KEY clue here, is this: When running a ping -t to the gateway (2wire 3800HGV-B) from the Windows 7 machine:If the ping comes back with a TTL of 255 - internet works. If the ping comes back with a TTL of 65 - internet doesn't work. So, to summarize: Windows 7 Laptop (wireless) --------- issue exists Windows Vista Desktop (wired) ----- issue exists Ubuntu laptop (wireless)------------------issue DOES NOT exist. Any help would be appreciated!

I'll give it a try. My lan driver is realtek but my wireless is an Intel 3945 and I've been getting the same problems on both wired and wireless. You may be right but my Lan port is broken (broke a pin) so I wont be able to test it. I wonder if the same issue effects the wireless driver also? Thanks

In addition, if the computers are connected to a router. Please also upgrade the router’s firmware and see how it works.Nicholas Li - MSFT

Thanks for the reccomendation but this problem happens even connected directly to the Modem with no router. I have determined its a problem with in Windows 7. Keep in mind no problems on Vista and I have a duel boot to test. I'm tired of trying and have given up. I'll just wait. Sad days for MS!!

I had this intermittent problem with Vista.Did a clean install of 7 RC, didn't need any third-party drivers for wireless, and have had no wireless problems at all in the two months it's been running.Yes and my Wireless card is a Realtek as well.Perhaps uninstall the Realtek driver and let Windows use it's own?

Gordon,Vista was fine for me from the beginning. My wifi card is Intel not Realtek. Wired is Realtek. I tried all drivers and no help. Intel doesnt give you much of an option since they have no 7 driver on the website and the default 7 driver is 5 months old.

I only gave that as an example.

Honestly people its a Win 7 problem..not a driver in my opinion. This is effecting too many differnet hardware configurations.

Ive contacted a Microsoft Tech I met at an event and HE doesnt seem to know whats up. I've sent him al the URL from around the web on this for reference. I'll post any update on myside.

As an update... i updated to the official realtek 7 driver and i noticed no problems whatso ever now... but for whatever reason, windows update is insisting upgrading (downgrading?) my driver. Might be worth it to check the wireless driver maker's site. Fixed my problem...

Yea. My Windows 7 laptop is a Dell Adamo with the Intel 5300 AGN card. I've tried using both the included Windows Drivers and Intel Vista drivers without success.I believe the KEY info here is this:When running a ping -t to the gateway (2wire 3800HGV-B) from the Windows 7 (wireless) machine Or Vista Desktop (wired) machine:If the ping comes back with a TTL of 255 - internet works. If the ping comes back with a TTL of 65 - internet doesn't work. Why does Windows sometimes set the TTL value differently? I briefly considered the router is bouncing the packets back and forth somewhere, but all pings are returned <1ms. So I doubt that is the case.

Thank you very much. I hope this can be resolved.Perhaps it would be worth opening a MS support case on this. I have a few with my Microsoft Enterprise Agreement, but I hate to waste it on a laptop. From my reading around the internet, this WILL stop us from moving the company to Windows 7 until this issue is resolved. Apparently it's rather common. Including several threads on this forum I discovered after posting this one.

I agree on that. The copy I have of 7 Ultimate was given to me at the IT break out event in Florida. From what I was told it was the official final release. I dont think I get support but I will try today and get back to you all. I'm going to try it on my desk top next week and see what happens also. SAD!!Tony
