Windows 7 in a Server 2000 domain
Does anyone know if this will work? Yes, I know... we are going to be migrating to server 2003, but maybe not before deploying Windows 7.

Yes, Windows 7 will work in a Windows 2000 domain. However, you may have to modify which how Windows 7 handles NTLMresponses. Open GPEDIT.MSC and go to Computer Configuration >> Windows Settings >> Security Settings >> Local Policies >> Security Options. Fie the policy named Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level. The default setting is Send NTLMv2 response only; however, you may need to set this to Send NTLM response only to work with a Windows 2000 domain. The Explain tab will contain practically all of the information you will need to make the correct decision. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I already am running "Send NTLM V2 Response Only \ refuse LM & NTLM" for that setting in my Win2k server AD Group Policy. From what you are saying, I presume that matches the default in Win 7, correct?

In your situation, you should be okay. One painless way of testing is to create a test container that contains the Windows 7 machines. On one of your more powerful machines, you can install a couple of instances of Windows 7 in virtual machines and then join the virtual machines to the domain. Keep one Win 7 machine in a default state while you tinker with the other if you have trouble joining your W2KAD. Once you have the settings nailed down, then you can move to the bare metal.

I can speak from experience that yes, it will work - and Ididn't have to do any modifications. Surprisingly Vista and Win 7 beta 1 were both equally smooth in connecting to my Win 2k server. In fact, out of all of the systems I've ever connected to an AD domain, Win 7 was probably the easiest, most hassle free - and the fastest yet.
