Windows 7 hard freeze
Problem I recently built a computer and decided to put Windows 7 64-bit on the system. Since I have installed the OS, the computer will lock up seemingly at random. I cannot move the mouse or enter a key, and there does not seem to be any pattern to when the freeze occurs. I was able to leave the computer on all night and there was not a freeze, but another time the system froze after 5 minutes of web surfing. Here are my specs: GIGABYTE GA-EP45T-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard 2.66 GHz Core 2 Quad Processor Q9400 ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler G.SKILL 4GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Sapphire 100259L Radeon HD 4870 512 MB SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V - POWER SUPPLY Diagnosis Thus Far: I have run a memory check through windows twice now, and both times there has been no issue detected. I have disabled the wireless card that I am using to connect to the network, and I still saw the freeze. I re-installed Windows 7 completely, and without installing any programs besides Firefox and Avast! the freeze still occurred. In Event Viewer the only Critical issue I see is a Kernel-Power log, but that appears to have been from hard reset I had to do by pushing the power button The seeming randomness of the freezes makes me believe that this is a power supply issue, but the supply is brand new from a reputable vendor. Is there a test, short of buying a new power supply, that I can run or a log I can check to track down this issue? Thanks in advance!

Hello Adam,There likely wouldn't be anything in Event Viewer if the computer froze up. There are several little gadgets available to test power supplies for malfunctions that are relatively cheap but I would have to say that does not sound like the problem to me. Have you tried running the troubleshooter in Action Center to check for conflicts? Also running Performance Monitor on all your main pieces of hardware to see if something is working too hard leading up to the freeze. You could also try removing all but one stick of RAM and see if it happens again.-Scott

I had the same issue on my pc till I threw it out the window, tried as mentioned above, reloaded still nothing. swaped HD into my primary desk top and same issue continued. will be loading XP once repairs are complete.great to look at, runs fast and a big improvement over vista....17 hard freeze per day is not acceptable.comp details. Hi,I have the same or maybe just similar problem. Windows 7 RC1 freezes at random times (mouse moves, but nothing responds). After waiting for several minutes everything starts working again. Nothing in even viewer.-yuriy

Just for solidarity, I, too have the same issue. I've tried to figure out what could be causing it, but so far, nothing seems to make any sense. I've reinstalled Windows 7. I've swapped hardware around. So far, nothing seems to work. I can say that I'm running on a Dell XP laptop without any lockups thus far, and the lockups occur on my self built desktop.Dual core Pentium 6600 2.4 ghz4gb RAM64-bit OSNVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTSAt first, I suspected my USB keyboard or mouse. The ONLY thing in common to the freezes was moving the mouse. Didn't matter if I was in an open window, or no windows were open (froze once on desktop when I was moving the mouse toward the gadgets).Tried swapping those out, without success. Still think it could be the Logitech G15 keyboard. Logitech provides no support, not even beta drivers for Windows 7, and was slow to support Vista. Was able to install Vista drivers using compatibility mode, but still locking up.Either the video card is throwing off an error, or perhaps disk or RAM access is somehow freezing it, but as stated, it can freeze without any programs running, windows open, or anything other than moving the mouse occuring. Have run it all night several times, and it's not been frozen. So either it unsticks itself after a time (not waited more than 5 minutes so far), or it doesn't freeze when left alone.Don't have a PS2 keyboard, and couldn't get Windows to acknowledge a PS2 mouse, so cannot test that theory.VERY frustrating. Certainly understand it's beta software, and very hopeful this is traced and found before release. I'd like to say it's better than Vista, but Vista never ran my programs, or worked well, period, so though I bought the black box copy (most expensive), It lasted only a few days on my system, and I've run XP ever since. Don't want to go back to XP again... how depressing!Hopefully someone out there will actually find something that stops this, or at least reasonably figure out the cause.THX

I'm also disappointed because I tried the last RC and I encounter freezes 4 or 5 minutes after the computer starts. Never had problems with XP or the Windows 7 beta :(

Hi, I have the same or maybe just similar problem. Windows 7 RC1 freezes at random times (mouse moves, but nothing responds). After waiting for several minutes everything starts working again. Nothing in even viewer. -yuriy I had the same issue as you. But instead several minutes, my system started to work as should after few seconds. I'm sure it's related with Windows 7/or drivers as Vista SP1 x64 worked like a charm in the same system. I also noted that when I'm running XP in my virtual machine (Sun xVM VirtualBox), and then shut down the guest OS, and if I'm listening music, playback stop for about two seconds. It's also randomly. I think that it's driver related or occurs when the HD is working hard, maybe a problem of how 7 manage HD resources. Anyway, I haven't noted the problem again (except the virtual machine that doesn't worry me). The only diference between the original installation (when happen) to the current configuration is that I upgraded video card and sound drivers. Do you've a Realtek sound card? Here's the thread I started for the issue: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproperf/thread/e89f6695-186d-4bbb-a8da-a8c999d85c55 Anyway I reported this issue directly to the developers using the correct thread here. -Windows 7 x64 RC -MSI K9A2 Platinum BIOS V1.8 -AMD Phenom X4 9950 @2.7 -MSI HD 4850 -4 GB DDR2 Kingston @667 -Seagate 160 GB SATAII -Cooler Master Real Power Pro 550W

Ok, I just solved my problem. I got these freezes only on Windows 7, not on XP. What I did, is that i disabled in the bios the floppy disk drive. Then I reboot and couldn't log into Windows 7... So, i decided to reinstall from the CD and now, everything is going smooth. :)

I am having the same issue as seen here by others. I did not have the issue running Beta, but since installing the RC, freezing has happened at random. I have done roughly 7 clean installs, changed drives, swapped out all memory, run the memory test and still nothing. As of recently i'm lucky to get 5 minutes use of the pc before freezing, sometimes not even getting past the Log In screen as it hesitates at "Welcome" for a couple minutes and freezes there. I have also recently tried going back to a x86 install to see if it's the 64bit that it doesn't like....but no go.i know the Beta is ending soon and don't want to deal with installing it again for a short time, so as it is right now, it's back to Vista for me.

i haven't had a floppy setup on my mobo in years, so i've always turned it off in the bios. Bios is the same before and after the switch from Beta to RC as well.i tried Safe Mode today for a bit as well, thought it was going well, then i came back from the restroom and it was frozen....just wouldn't do anything.I did notice someone mentioned the wireless mouse issue. I don't have a corded mouse/keyboard that i can find, so that is one thing i have yet to troubleshoot. If that works for anyone (logitech here), i'll go get an old mouse from a friend to confirm before i go back to Vista...i really don't want to go back.

Installed W7 RC1 on core-duo Lenovo U110 with 3GB RAM and 128GB SSD. I notice the freeze (mousepointer movesbut applications, taskbar don't respond to clicks) when initiating a drive save and then see the disk LED continuously on (no blinking or flashing to indicate random access activity). The freeze stops when the disk LED turns off and everything's normal again--after 30 seconds, sometimes 3 minutes, sometimes after several hours I give up and force power off.Once doing that caused corruption in the security folder of the Windows directory. So I suspected that it was continuous hard drive activity. Because I'm using a new SSD (RunCore) I feared that it was a problem with the drive (shifting blocks of data around, defragging, whatever these things do to level wear, etc). But I'm also using Windows 7 and with all the posts on freezes related to that, I'm not sure which is the culprit.I, too, would hate to have to go back to XP, but reliability is more important than glitz right now. The freezing is indeed random. Some days nothing. Others: every hour or two! I can't ever get task manager up during the freeze to see what processes are running, or Performance Monitor. There seems to be some very small time slices thrown to background processing because if I wait long enough a screen or window redraw will eventually occur but in very slow partial redraws. If I overrun the keyboard or mouse click buffers, then even these freeze. A couple of times the screen just suddenly turns off and the system reboots. Once a got a BSOD.Not boding well for building my confidence in Windows 7 on the RC (build 7100) no less!

I have problem with freezing too. I can use the computer perfectly if ai disable the vide graphic drivers, but I can't play games :( Sometimes when i have the drivers enabled computer freezes if I open only the start menu. I have old Ati Radeon 9600Pro.

I too have been having hard freezes on home built computer. Running Win7 64bit version and most of my freezes come when on the internet, but they are so random it's very difficult to understand what is causing them. Memory checks out, hard drive, video card, etc... Frustrating!

I have a very similar problem on my Lenovo T60. Random freezes, about 3 to 5 min duration - then it's fine again. Hard drive activity light is solid on, and if I am in a gaming environment, it will always disconnect me. I have updated all drivers, and I don't even have many applications on here, so I am out of ideas. Has Microsoft addressed the issue at all?

Hi, I have the same or maybe just similar problem. Windows 7 RC1 freezes at random times (mouse moves, but nothing responds). After waiting for several minutes everything starts working again. Nothing in even viewer. -yuriy These symptoms sound like a hard disk error. Try running a diagnostic tool from your HDD's manufacturer.-Windows 7 x64 RC -MSI K9A2 Platinum BIOS V1.8 -AMD Phenom X4 9950 @2.7 -MSI HD 4850 -4 GB DDR2 Kingston @667 -Seagate 160 GB SATAII -Cooler Master Real Power Pro 550W

I have run check disk several times (no bad errors) run C Cleaner, and Lenovo hard drive test. Also, no obvious items in the error logs, and I double checked to see if my vid & sound drivers were up to date. I am exasperated.

People experiencing crash should run diagnostic utilities to discard hardware problems in the first place. If tests through positive results, then it can be a software problem (not necessarily is Windows itself. It can be a driver). If problem persists you can try to install only the necessary programs you had. Although I suffered a rare crash in Win 7 with 3 new installation in the same PC, currently the computer works OK. I never suffered the same issue, strange.-Windows 7 x64 RC -MSI K9A2 Platinum BIOS V1.8 -AMD Phenom X4 9950 @2.7 -MSI HD 4850 -4 GB DDR2 Kingston @667 -Seagate 160 GB SATAII -Cooler Master Real Power Pro 550W

Okay, hit the wrong button first...sorry Steve_Doc for labeling yours "Proposed Answer." Anywho, I discovered that my freezes were a result of my CanoScan 5600F USB drivers. For some reason, Windows 7 did not like how they were installed. Uninstalled them, reinstalled them, and have had no problems since. I would suggest looking at any USB peripheral device as being a possible source of the hard freezes that don't unfreeze.

Funny you say that. I have CanoScan ToolBox and drivers installed, as well as DymoLabelWriter 400 drivers. Should i remove the drivers?

I would definitely try it. I know it worked for me......so far. After I uninstalled, rebooted, then reinstalled and rebooted and then plugged my scanner in, everything seems to be running okay....hope it works!

I am having the same issue. At random times the mouse will continue to move but the system doesn't accept clicks. It freezes for serveral minutes and thenit "just"unfreezes. This started when I upgraded my 32 bit toshiba from vista to Windows 7. I am also having issues with windows exploring freezing. If I click it it doesn't do anything. If I click it again I get the message "windows explorer isn't responding" do you want to wait, start again... I click start again and it will reload, but it is seriously annoying!thanks for any suggestions.
