Windows 7 hangs up from time to time
Hello. I'm using Windows 7 RTM Build 7600 x64 ENG with all updates from Windows Update.Yesterday I uninstalled Kaspersky Antivirus and NetLimiter 3 Beta 3, because KAV didn't want to update itself, and NL hung up my Network for some reason. After that my Windows hangs up all the time. Every half an hour or so. It may happen during Internet surfing. or watching DVD, or Skype. Any time.It just hangs so that I can't do anything. Caps Lock doesn't work.I have to restart the PC. After that I get a screen which asks me if I want to boot in Safe Mode. But in Windows no Error messages appears, so I have no clue what could be the reason of this.Where can I find the problem? Are there any logs maybe or whatever?

Hi,Can you launch the Task Manager while the computer hangs? You can right click the taskbar or press Ctrl + Alt + Del to launch the Task Manager, then open Resouce Monitor to note if any application uses abnormal CPU and try to temperarily end this process. If you can't launch the Task Manager, please restart the computer to perform a clean boot. Clean Boot=======1)Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.2)Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3)Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".4)Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK.5)Please test this issue in the Clean Boot environment, if the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issueIf the issue persists, let's perform a System Repair to automatically fix corrupted files. System Repair==========1) Restart your computer and press F8 at the Startup.2) Select Repair your computer at Advanced Boot Options.3) Choose System Repair in System Recovery Options.4) After System Repair is finished, restart the computer and log on with the additional account to see if Maximize button is enabled.Best RegardsDale

I got tired of it (and didn't see this reply yet) so I reinstalled Windows. New drivers for some hardware, new sofware versions. Also I copied some folders from Roaming folder under AppData folder before reinstalling Windows to save settings of most of software I use. In new Windows I moved them back after installing that software. And yesterday I started getting hangs again. It hangs totally. Nothing works. And sometimes there's repetative irritating sound during computer being hanged (untill I press Restart). It happens even when I don't have any sounds playing during the moment when it hangs. The problem with that way you described, is that hangs happen not regulary and might happen once in an hour or even more rarely. By the way, sometimes after reset I keep getting an error message saying: "Error: Unfortunately the Skype executable is corrupt. Plese re-install." It happens only after I reset PC after Windows hang up. It also happened before I reinstalled Windows. Yesterday after one of the hnag ups and reset I got a message saying - SATA Port2 Device Error. I have checked both of my HDDs with Seagate SeaTools in DOS mode with Long Tests and they Passed them. Also I checked my RAM using Windows 7 Memory Tests (Full) few days earlier and they passed them too. Also yesterday during another hang, motherboard started beeping continuously. But after reset it beeped once like it supposed to. I don't understand what's going on with my PC.

Hi,It seems to be more of hardware related. You may need to update your motherboard to the latest version so as to support devices functioning correctly. Regarding the beeping sound, it usually can be related to RAM, motherborad and Hard disk detection. I would like to suggest you opening your PC and check connnections for RAM, hard disk. you can unplug hard disk to see if it beeps. Meanwhile, try to plug out RAM then insert back to see what the result is.Best RegardsDale

Hello, My MB has the latest BIOS and drivers installed, so that is not the problem probably. At first I thought so too. So I replaced SATA cable and power cable of the second SATA drive, that was getting errors and plugged it in the third SATA port just in case of something. But that did not help. And one more reason why this is probably not the main reason for the problem is that, as I said before, I tested RAM and HDD in DOS mode. Those tests took hours to complete. And PC did not hang during them. While in Windows PC hangs once in hour or so. Right now I'm trying the Services option you told earlier. We'll see if it helps. I did not turn off the Start Up software though. I wanna see if Services will be enough.

So, with disabled services it still hung up, as well as with disabled Start Up items... Can you please explain in more detailed way what did you mean by saying: "4) After System Repair is finished, restart the computer and log on with the additional account to see if Maximize button is enabled." What's an additional account and what Maximize button did you mean? Nevermind..... That's not needed. I just tried to perform a Repair during System Boot after pressing F8, and I got this: after pressing Enter few times it started loading (looks like Vista boot), and then I got this:

Hi,The blue screen error message indicates that the system disk isn't mounted correctly. Computer can't load the boot disk to launch Windows. This may be caused by corrupted boot configuration, you need to repair the boot configuration to narrow down this kind of issue. To do this, let's try to perform a Startup Repair through Windows 7 installation disc. Please refer to the following steps:Note: System hangs can be caused by connected USB devices, it is recommended to disconnect external USB devices during Startup Repair. Meanwhile, please ensure that the DVD-ROM is the first booting device. 1)Please insert the Windows 7 DVD and reboot the computer.2)When we are prompted to press a key to boot from the DVD, please press Enter or the space bar.3)Choose your language settings, and then click Next. 4)Click Repair your computer. 5)Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.6)On the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair. Startup Repair might prompt you to make choices as it tries to fix the problem, and if necessary, it might restart your computer as it makes repairs.Best RegardsDale

What's interesting is that Windows itself boots fine. It's just that System Repair, that has some problems

Alright. I really think now that all these hangs are somehow connected with WinAmp. My PC can work for hours, but whenever I start WinAmp and listen music on it, after a while (always different time though) it hangs. It could've been the reason in no-Services/Startup option too, because I'm not sure, but very possible that I started WinAmp there too. One more thing that made me think of WinAmp is that after one of the hangs and restart I finally got a Windows message about crash, and it said that there's a problem with audio driver, and as a fix it reinstalled it. Then I downloaded latest version of the driver from Realtek.com.tw - but it still hangs after music being played for a while. But I think that the reason is not in WinAmp itself, because I remember few times when PC hanged during a movie playback in PowerDVD. So maybe this problem is somehow connected with audio.

Hi,As you mentioned above, if it is the case that the hangs are mainly related to audio, the cause can be related to incompatible audio driver, sound condex. To troubleshoot this kind of issue , I would like to propose the following suggestions:1. Open the Playing Audio troubleshooter to fix the problem. 1)Click the Start button and click Control Panel.2)Click Troubleshooting viewing by large icons.3)Click Hardware and Sound.4)Click Playing Audio to detect sound issue and automatically fix it.2. Contact manufacturer for the latest Windows 7 compatible sound driver and reinstall it in Windows compatibility mode.3. Uninstall sound programs such as PowerDVD, WinAmp and test to see if the issue occurs, then reinstall these applications.Best RegardsDale

Hi,I've got the same problem. Windows 7 hangs up from time to time but it seems to hang up randomly. The only exception to the is that when i copy larger files from my usb hdd (+- 8gb) windows hangs up without any message, keyboard doesn't work, mouse doesn't work and the screen doesn't change.Only solution is a cold reboot by pressing the powerbutton.Any ideas?

So I replaced SATA cable and power cable of the second SATA drive Hi, have you tried using only a HDD during and after the fresh install? Then you can add the 2nd hdd in case the error or hanging issue is gone.

This is terrible.I was sick of these hangs, though during maybe a week there were no hangs, but something happened and they started again.I reinstalled WIndows, but! I got a error code 0x80070570 during Unpacking. One more try after reading forums and unplugging USB Stick- everything worked, but during first launch I already got an error message about some stuff. It was still hanging from time to time when I was listening music. And Windows Live Messenger didn't work at all. It got closed each time I opened it.So I ddecied to reinstall once more. This time no USB sticks... Format C: and.... Error again error code 0x80070570.One more time I went to these forums to find a solution. Some advices were about Memory sticks.I have 4 GB of memory, 4 Sticks each 1 GB. All 4 are Kingston, but 2 of them have Kingston chipsets and other 2 have Nanya chipsets.I was getting BSODs frequently when I bought other 2. So I changed the timings of memory to 5-5-5-15 and it worked fine.I removed those 2 Sticks with Nanya chipsets, and Windows installed fine.Well, I decided to test it without any software. Only thing I did was Windows Update. I installed all updates.Ran Windows Media Player and started listening to music. Half an hour or even less and another hang happened.I unplugged second HDD (Whics actually is not the one with music), and did the music test again, and got the hang again.I didn't even install any drivers, except those from WU.I don't know what can cause this anymore.Any ideas?

Looks like the problem was either in those two memory Sticks with Kingston chips, or in Motherboard Slots. I put those 2 Sticks with Nanya chips into other two Memory slots, and Windows seems to be working fine. Haven't got any hangs for a long time, all time listening to music. Strange, because Windows Memory tests said that Memory passed all tests. O_O

Hi, Try to boot in safe mode and verify if the computer works fine without freezing. To boot to the desktop in safe mode keep tapping F8 key during restart. Once you see the option to boot in safe mode select it and press enter. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode If the computer works fine in safe mode, you try to put the computer in clean boot state to make sure that third party applications are not causing this issue with computer performance. To perform a clean boot, follow the steps below: 1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue. 2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup. 3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box. 4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All. 5. Click OK. 6. When you are prompted, click Restart. 7. After the computer starts, check if it works normally.
