Windows 7 hangs
Hello, i am frustrated as having again and again situation where my system is not responding, sometimes for 1 or 2 minutes. I have this issue since Windows Vista x64 and it is getting worse with Windows 7 x64. (One month ago, i made a clean install of Windows 7 x64 on 2 brand new HDs organized in hardware raid 0.) Mostly i have this "coma-phases" when waking up my pc from standby and if i have one or more virtual machines running. The virtual machines are based on VMWorkstation. It seems to be related to network accesses as the symptoms getting weaker when deactivate network adapter and reactivate it. I will write to VMWare as well, but perhaps Microsoft is the correct address for this issues - who knows ? My PC has 8 GIG RAM, a quad Core CPU, Core2 9450, two hybrid HD in raid 0. My virtual machines take 7 GIG Ram at the maximum. What i do not understand is: How is this possible , in times of multithread and multicore the whole system turning into "no respond status" when only some parts (i guess network) are not able to response ? I have similar symptoms when putting a DVD in my optical drive: the complete system doese not respond for up to 10 seconds ? Windows 7 is nice and probably still the best Desktop OS. However, there is may a major Design mistake.

If the issue existed prior to installing Windows 7, then perhaps it's hardware related (motherboard), or does the not responding only occur when VMware is in use?

It can hang so long time, when VMWare in use. However, the OS should be the sovereign.

Hi ,if this issue still exists after installing different windows system , it seems to be a problem of hardware related . You can try the following suggestions and see if the culprit can be found: Unplug all unnecessary devices and then perform a Device Clean Boot: ==== 1. Click Start, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the Search bar and press Enter. 2. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers". 3. Right click on your sound card and then click "Properties. 4. In the dropdown menu of Device Usage, please choose "Do not use this device (disable)" and click OK. 5. Please use the same method to disable other dubious hardware such as: internal modem, network card and CD-R drive. Please note some devices such as video adapter are not available to be disabled. Also , I suggest you can update the BIOS, chipset and other device drivers to the latest version. Meanwhile , test if the issue is RAM related. You can plug out half of the RAM and test the result. If the issue does not occur, re-plug the RAM one by one to narrow down the issue.

Having the same problem with Win 7, 7100, X64 ver in that it seriously hangs on the Starting Windows message. classpnp.sys appears to be the culprit. It started a little over a week ago with daily boot-up. Happened one time, rebooted, went right through to login without issue. Next day, same scenario. Following day, had to reboot twice. Given that my machine takes forever to boot when I have my iPod connected I opted to disconnect. Following day, 1 reboot required. The rest was 1,2,2. Today - I had to reboot 9 times. Progressively worse? Then, for no apparent reason, it gave a login - logged in and when I arrived at my desktop all icons were gone and black background. Killed and restarted explorer. Took about 3 minutes but it finally rebuilt the desktop and populated the screens. Here is a primer on what most posts have talked about and what I've tried: • Did not have any issues installling, this is a single os-boot, on a fresh drive • Did set the BIOS: USB mode - legacy to disabled. • Did disable AHCI • Unplugged all USB devices minus the external 'hub' in my monitors. • Tried Safe-mode • Tried 'last known good hardware config' • Tried 'disable unsigned driver requirement' One last element here that I'll throw into the mix: Over the last few days, for no reason other than doing HD video or some other intense visual (not application specific) the Nvidia drivers crash. This is the only peculiar behavior that coincides with this 'Starting Windows' hang. It didn't happen before and neither did the hang. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as this is wicked-frustrating. For More Information and know how to fix windows 7 hangs problem

Hello, for my problem i have found a workaround: when waking up, i open device panel, deactive my network adapter then reactive it. This helps. However, i have the feeling that all network operations are still a bit dragging. The suspend mode is very useful in order to save energy (money). If i would need to close all my virtual machines, i would never switch to suspend mode. What i do not understand is, why the whole systems stops working for seconds, when an optical disc get's loaded...

Hi , I suggest you update the network adapter driver to the latest version to check the result. Meanwhile, de-select “Allow the computer to turn off this this device to save power” option for the network adapter in device Manager: 1. Click the Start Button, type Device Manager in the Search bar and press "Enter". Click Continue if necessary. 2. Double click to expand the "Network adapters". 3. Right click the network card and click "Properties". 4. Click Power Management tab, uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this this device to save power”. Regarding the system hangs when an optical drive loaded issue, does it occur after updating the device firmware and driver? You also can contact the device manufacturer directly to confirm its compatibility with Windows 7. Also, access Clean Boot to check the issue. If the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, you can continue to narrow down which entry is causing the issue. Hope it helps . Regards , Alex

Hello Alex, thanks for answer. I followed your suggestion which did not improved system lethargy after wake up. So i disabled my network adapter and plugged in an Intel CT Desktop Adapter and still having this problem. Well, the optical drive issue is something i had with all windows versions and had also on older hardware. I am sure, this is a design mistake. For some reasons the complete file subsystem is blocked when accessing to optical drive.
