Windows 7 frequently lets 3rd Party App Crash
Hi, I have a very strange Problem. I have a customer with 3 new Dell OptiPlex 780. They are all running Windows 7 and Office 2007 SP2. In the backend I have a SBS 2008 Server. Connected thru a 1GB Network. The Clients are all running a 3rd Party Lawyer Application. The Application contains an Access DB and some Program files on the Server. As far as I known on the client there is only a Shortcut to an Exe witch is stored on an Mapped Share (Mapped with Grouppolicy Preferences) and an ODBC Connection to the Server. But I’m not the specialist for that App. My Problem is, that almost every Evening (Between 5PM and 8PM) (Sometimes also during the Day) the Users get some SQL Errors and the App crashes. They report that sometimes they have a red X over some of the mapped drive letters. The Funny thing is that the clients do not have the problem at the same time. The Users also report, that when they perform a restart of their clients after lunch they usually don’t have the problem in the evening. I already updated the NIC drivers and BIOS with no success. I also wrote a batch witch constantly pings the clients and let it run on every machine (so every machine was pining everyone else) but I had no lost pings at all, but the App crashed anyway. The event logs and the clients and the server show nothing suspicious during the time of the crash. The described situation lets me believe that it is a client related problem. Right now I have absolutely no clues left. I really would appreciate any help.

start at the router ..does it support windows 7??? update the firmware. Disable IP6 on the windows 7 boxes. Setup an XP box on the network ..does it crash as well??? Some sloppy VB code in my Access Database (cross domain scripting) was crashing windows 7 boxes, once I cleaned up my junk code all is good.

Hi, Can you post the detail error message here for research? Besides above suggestions, please also temporarily disable firewall and perform a Clean Boot to check the result. Does the issue persist? If so, please capture the error message and upload it for research. Thanks, Novak

Hi thank you very mutch for your Answers, her in Switzerland we have some holidays right now and the customers office is closed. I will have to wait till monday to test your suggestions. I have already disabled IPv6 on the clients and I have changed the IPv4 settings from DHCP to Static IP Addresses. But I’m gone test the rest of your suggestions on Monday and report back. Hi Sound like a third party app issue not hardware or network related, Had a similar issue with Sage running backups... all machines were trying to back or sync at the same time. Try investigate the sync schdule and or back ups setting when the app is tasked to run check sum data transfers. hope this helps.

Hi together, i performed the Firmware Upgrade on the Switch and deactivated the Firewall on Monday Evening. On one Machine I performed a Clean Boot. Before those steps the Customers had errors like the following: To me they all seamed ODBC or SQL related. The Machine of the Customer where I preformed the Clean Boot had yesterday no such Error. But this doesn’t mean that the problem is solved. They always had Days where there was no problem. But Yesterday Evening the Customer received an Other Error and his Outlook Crashed. I need to tell you that the 3rd Party App also has an Outlook Add-In (It is called Outlook Bridge). The Error was the Following: Unfortunately the Customer did not send me the Log File. But he send me a Logfile another Time. But I don’t kwon if it was the same Error. But I post it anyway: http://7e8geg.blu.livefilestore.com/y1pMObuxUKWt3iGiKvvANYu9p9Hjf8aASJwdZGpgpMsMGavYX0LfTqTaOvhUF-8FcMZzq8xLPT1W1qJvp5HVL_lryUcKvMfRT62/Eintrag.10.5.10.TXT I find it very strange that the Errors only happen in the early Evening and that they seem not to happen if they perform e reboot during the lunchbreak. Right now I still have the Firewall deactivated and one machine is running in Clean Boot Mode. I would like to find out if the ODBC related errors happen again.. Do you have any other Suggestions? Thanks for your help Pascal

Tonight they all had de problems again with the odbc related Errors again. So I’m going to enable the firewall again and disable de clean boot. When they have those crashes it seems that outlook is almost always hanging. Again they had no such problems thru the day. But this evening they had it again. I think it could be something with a scheduled task. But none of them seams really suspicious. Do you have any other suggestions? I would really appreciate them. Thanks Pascal
