Windows 7 drops internet connection after hybernation
I am having an issue with windows 7 when it come out of sleep/hibernation mode. whenever it wakes up it wont connect to the internet through wireless or wired network it was connected too. it says that i am connected to the network but with limited connectivity. the only way i have been able to reconnect is by either restarting or running the command line and releasing and then renewing my ip connection several times. I have had this same problem on every network i have been on so i dont think it is the hardware on that end. i have tried updating my nic card through device manager but it says everything is up to date. so do yall have any suggestions?

I have the same problem. I have an Atheros AR8121 PCI-E Ethernet Controller. Everything works well except when it goes to hibernation and then when I come back it's limited connection.Only way I've been able to fix it is to disable and re-enable the card which is a pain.

I`ve been using Win7 RC for 2 weeks now.. and this has never happened to meI have an HP Pavillion DV6700 and my wireless router is a D-Link DIR655
May 25th, 2009 5:34pm

It only happens to me when the unit goes into hibernation mode, if I wake it from standby / sleep mode before hibernation mode it just takes a few seconds to reconnectI use a few AP's during the day so it it is not a AP thing

I find Windows 7 internet connectivity flaky as well. Half a dozen times (probably after hibernation or most recently and update) I've lost internet connectivity. Usually a hard reboot is required but not this time. Nothing I do gets it back. By contrast, I boot straight over to XP and things are working just fine, so my hardware is working correctly. No way I can stay with Windows 7 under these circumstances. I'll try the "ipconfig" thing and report back, but this is just no good.

I've been having the same problem. Not really after hibernation but I've seen a few times after having media center open the connection drops. The other pc's on my network also loses their connection. Th router lights are flashing to show connectivity but no connection. After doing the find the problem thingy it says to restart the router. I'll try the ipconfig option. Totally forgot that.

Same problem here... I've tried unistalling/reinstalling, updating (didn't work at all).Probalbythe same as the rest of you. My current plan is to disble the sleep mode (or a high performance scheme)...I am using a Linksys WUSB300N.... Had loss in connectibity issues in XP but unplugging and replugging started it right back up.... Don't exactly know why the same doesn't work in Windows 7. Was impressed that upon initial install OS detects and automatically installs. Works great after reboot.... Would be nice if it worked after sleep mode!

If anybody is interested - disabling sleep mode does keep the connection active. At least it works when you want to use it.....

hi,Thanksfor selfhosting Windows 7 and providng feedback. I am in DHCP team and wanted to investigate on the issue you are facing. Is this issue of internet connectivitynot thereon "sleep-resume" easily reproducible? In case you are able to repro it, please provide the following logs to meby following the instructions below and then send them to dhcpblog at microsoft dot com1) Copy-paste the following exact instructions(starting from "@echo off" and end including ":eof") in a dhcptrace.cmd file@echo off IF "%1" == "-start" (netsh dhcpclient trace disable > NULnetsh trace stop > NULecho.echo Starting dhcp trace..echo.del /Q %TEMP%\DhcpTracesecho.echo Creating the folder %TEMP%\DhcpTracesecho.mkdir %TEMP%\DhcpTracesipconfig /all > %TEMP%\DhcpTraces\IpConfigStart.txtREG QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion" /v BuildLabEx > %TEMP%\DhcpTraces\BuildLabVersion.txtREG QUERY "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters" /s > %TEMP%\DhcpTraces\TcpIpParametersStart.txtREG QUERY "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\Parameters" /s > %TEMP%\DhcpTraces\TcpIp6ParametersStart.txtREG QUERY "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dhcp\Parameters" /s > %TEMP%\DhcpTraces\DhcpParametersStart.txtnetsh trace start scenario=AddressAcquisition ^provider=Microsoft-Windows-TCPIP ^provider=Microsoft-Windows-winsock-AFD ^provider=Microsoft-Windows-WFP ^tracefile=%TEMP%\DhcpTraces\addracq-cap.etl protocol=UDP overwrite=yes report=no capture=yes >> %TEMP%\DhcpTraces\OtherLogs.txtnetsh dhcpclient trace enable >> %TEMP%\DhcpTraces\OtherLogs.txtnetsh dhcpclient trace dump copy /y %SYSTEMDRIVE%\Windows\System32\Logfiles\WMI\dhcpv4trace.log %TEMP%\DhcpTraces\dhcpv4tracestart.log >> %TEMP%\DhcpTraces\OtherLogs.txtcopy /y %SYSTEMDRIVE%\Windows\System32\Logfiles\WMI\dhcpv6trace.log %TEMP%\DhcpTraces\dhcpv6tracestart.log >> %TEMP%\DhcpTraces\OtherLogs.txtecho Dhcp tracing successfully startedgoto eof ) IF "%1" == "-stop" (echo.echo Stopping dhcp trace. Try to resume the machine from sleep state. You should not have seen the connectivity. Now try to do whatever works for you to get the connectivity back. It can be "release/renew" or machine restart or "disable/enable adapter" or anything else till you get the internet connectivity.4) Then from the elevated command prompt, execute "dhcptrace.cmd -stop"5) The log files are copied in %TEMP%\dhcptraces. 6) Please compress and send us this folder.7) Pleasemention the resolution step you took along with the traces. It will be really helpful if you can provide us the above mentioned traces to figure out the exact issue. Thanks

hi,For all of you are facing problem in internet connectivity on wireless adapter, please provide the following details to us at dhcpblog@microsoft.com: Output of command: netsh wlan show driver Device PNPID Router brand, model, hardware version (if applicable), firmware version Do other machines connected to the same router (wired/wireless) lose connectivity at the same time Thanks,Ranu
June 3rd, 2009 10:15am

Ranu,We are seeing this issue on the Windows7 Enterprise RTM. We see it on LAN and WIFI. I have seeing most when switching from my home WIFI (standby) then docking (LAN). The workaround so far has been to stop the firewall service and restart the DHCP client service. I have tried setting the global broadcast flag bit settings for WIFI which seems to have helped me connect to my WIFI. But today the fix was to restart the computer. This condition needs to be resolved. I will send you the logs shortly.

Not sure if this is what happened to me, but the first hibernation after clean install of Windows 7 Pro (installed on 10/22) left me with no internet. Rebooted and all was well. I'll watch to see if it happens again.

I'm having the same problem after resume from hibernation or sleep. I have to disconnect from the wireless and reconnect and all is fine.I'll send the info as well....Sony Vaio Clean install of Win7. After resume, I can disconnect then reconnect, but, will only have connection for a few minutes and it goes back to 'limited connectivity'. Only full resolution is reboot. I have Windows Home Server, so, have to leave computer in standby mode for auto backups during the day. Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. I have the same issue as all of you except that I am NOT on wireless. I am running W7 Ultimate, went thru beta and rc just fine without this problem, but soon as I installed the retail version i started losing internet whenever I idled for more than 5 or 10 minutes. I've turned off all sleep/hibernate options i can, but still no joy, help!
November 9th, 2009 5:24am

I have the exact same problem. I've tried the following with success for a little while, only to see the problem return: 1. disable ipv6 2. install the latest version of my network driver from intel 3. uninstall the driver and reboot 4. set WINS address manually to gateway 192.168.0.1 5. updated my router firmware to latest (dlink 634m) I have windows 7 64 bit, ultimate retail. This was working fine in RC version. Any other ideas? this is really annoying. I can figure it out, but it's a pain when my non-techy wife encounters it.

Same here, I lose connection after reboot or, ofter resume from sleep. I never had the problem with the W7rc. I am wired to a lynksys wrt54g v 4.30. Windows7 ult 64.

by the way what I've found is a small bit easier to handle other than just rebooting my computer to make the internet work again, is to click on my Network icon on the bottom of the screen, Open Network and Sharing Center, Troubleshoot Problems, Internet Connections, then after it detects problems, have it fix them. It IS faster than a full reboot but I'd still much rather not have to do this at all! Has anyone come up with a fix for it? Please help!

I was having the exact same issue as everyone else. My connection never dropped, then one day I enabled a power management scheme to allow the system to go into hibernation. Immediately after the first hibernation period this problem arised. Luckily, the fix is really easy. The power management profile is turning off your network adapter. All you need to do is disable this feature. I've provided the step by step process below. 1. Click Start 2. Right Click Computer 3. Click Manage 4. Click Device Manager in the left window pane 5. Go to Network Adapters and click the arrow to the left of the words 6. Now you will see your network adapeter or adapters if you have more than one. In my case it was an Atheros L1 Gigabit. Right Click your network adapter. 7. Click Properties 8. Go to the Power Management Tab 9. Make sure all boxes are unchecked. 10. Once you've unchecked the boxes click ok and restart your system. 11. Enjoy never losing your connection again.

well I thought I'd done everything stated in the above message before but lo and behold I'd left one box checked. I thought that because it was grayed out it was inactive but once i clicked it off and let my computer idle several times over the last couple of days, I haven't lost connection once!! Thanks a lot for a working solution!

This finally worked for me. I had done this for my wired connection which is what I normally use but still had the problem. I had to do this for my wireless connection also and then no more problems for my wired connection. Weird but at least no more problem. Thanks. Michael

I consistently lose my internet connection when Windows 7 goes to sleep mode. When I bring the computer out of sleep mode, the network connection doesn't work (although I can access other computers on the LAN if I use the troubleshooter to reset the connection. The troubleshooter fails and says the DNS server is not responding. Every time windows goes to sleep it kills not only that computer's connection, but the internet stops working for all my computers, (I use a Linksys router 10/100). To reconnect to the internet I unplug my cable modem to reset it and then I can connect my win7 PC to the internet using ipconfig or the troubleshooter. I originally thought this was Comcast's fault, but now that I know it happens every time windows goes to sleep I am now sure it is a win7 bug. My Cable modem is a 7 year old Linksys model I bought at best buy. It is easily reproducible

I have had this same issue, especially after upgrading from Vista to 7. Here is how I finally fixed Windows 7 from dropping the internet connection after sleep/hybernation resume. I tried ALL the other suggestions on various websites to no avail. Finally, I simply uninstalled/reinstalled the Intel PRO/100 VE Network Adapter and all is working properly. I have had no more internet drops. Hope this works for you!

bah I was so happy when I thought i"d fixed the issue but nope it's still there. We now have Comcast triple play with thier new cablemodem/phone system receiver thing and it STILL happens. But now, instead of being able to use the network button to reset the system we have to reboot the cablemodem itself. So very frustrating because now it takes over 5 minutes per episode rather than 60 seconds it took before. Doesn't Microsoft have ANY sort of resolution for this other than 'I think this might help you' nonfixes?
