Windows 7 domain profile issue
I have a laptop at work where we have rolled out Windows 7 to it to test. Upon logging in I messed about with my profile, logged off, I believe either renamed the profile folder or may have deleted it, can’t remember. Now when I login to this profile, no matter what happens it keeps telling me it can’t find my profile and will use a temp one instead only. I look in the event logs and it says my profile can’t be found, logging in with a temp profile. But the profile folder is clearly there. I got around the issue by logging onto another windows 7 laptop and the profile loads fine. I then C$ to that laptop and copy the profile over to the laptop where the profile won’t work properly. I then login and it works fine. However, I then can’t change the background. It refuses to change. When I click in Personalization, the little Desktop Background image changes but nothing on the desktop does. The only thing that does change is the Window Colours. If I then delete the NTUSER.dat from this profile and login again, I get the temp profile issue again. Anyone got any clue what is going on? This is logging onto the domain but with no roaming profile set. It's not a group policy issue. I've now created a test environment on a VMWare setup. I login with my domain user account and it creates the local profile. I reboot the machine and login as admin. I rename my test profile to test.old. I login as test and it refuses to create a new profile and just uses a temp one instead. Any ideas?

I found a fix on another thread in technet. There was a mention of deleting a reg key on technet Go to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList And you’ll see a list of profiles with meaningless names Select through till you see you’re profile and then delete that entry. Log off and on again (reboot maybe required but log off appears to work) and you’re new profile will be created. I've done that in the vm environment and it works. Will try at work. But this is going to be a right pain if we have to do this every time we want to give someone a new profile. I tried this on the work machine and it worked. However, I still don't know why you can't copy your profile from another machine anymore, like I can with XP. It's as if the profile is now tired down to the SID on the laptop you log into.
