Windows 7 does not show floppy disk label in disc properties
When you have a floppy diskette in a floppy drive, on all editions of Windows you can right click the drive, select properties, and you will see a graph displaying floppy diskette usage as well as the volume label. Windows 7 just shows it blank. If you right click to FORMAT the diskette, the volume label will show up there.I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 build 7600

The reasonI beleive that windows 7 is not showing it because the floppy drive is such an old technology and over time, with new operating systems they will slowly start fading out old technologies. Best solution I can think of would be try using XP mode. Here is a link to download XP-Mode:http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

Thanks, but I already have Windows XP mode, working nicely to remotely manage my Windows Server 2003 Enterprise and Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise servers :) (Love Windows XP Mode, btw!)Besides ... using Windows XP mode and floppy diskettes is another veerrry interesting can of worms! Mounting floppy diskettes using Windows Virtual PC is not exactly the easiest thing to do, unlike Microsoft Virtual PC 2007.

It is true that floppy drive is an old technology and most recently operating system such as Windows 7 may do not support this technology as good as before. However, using Virtual Windows XP mode is a good idea to format your diskette but you have to take risk of getting worms. Here, I wonder if the floppy drive will not show up even you have inserted the diskette to the drive. If so, please check the setting in BIOS to ensure related options are enabled such as Enable Floppy Drive. (I am not very sure about the detail name of the option.)Or you can format your floppy diskette by using your friends computer which has Windows XP or Vista installed. Judy :)

A floppy diskette WILL show up under Windows XP mode, but you have to jump through many a hoop to get it to mount, since there is no setting in the GUI in Windows Virtual PC that allows you to do it. You have to find and download a CSCRIPT file in order to do it. And it must be done through the command line.

Sorry for my misunderstanding. I thought that you was unable to format floppy diskette on Windows 7. After doing a test, I found that it is normal that we cannot see Volume label by right clicking on Properties even there is a name on the diskette. But the volume label does show up when formatting the diskette. However, you can see Volume label via CMD. Please take the following steps, 1. Click the Start button, then in the "Start Search" box, type CMD but DO NOT press Enter yet. 2. In the list above, under "Programs" right-click on CMD that appears above and choose "Run as Administrator" and click "Continue". 3. In the open window, type the following command and press Enter: A: Dir Please press Enter after inputting a command and you can see the detail information of the diskette. Judy :)

Thanks, JudyYes I am aware of how you could find the volume label. Yes you can format a 3 1/2" floppy diskette in Windows 7 (heck you can still format a 5 1/4" floppy in Windows 7 using the FORMAT command--but not in the GUI)The point I was trying to make was that you can't read the volume label by right-clicking it and viewing the diskette's properties in the GUI, UNLIKE Windows Vista, Server 2008, Windows XP, Server 2003, Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows 98, Windows 95... I'm suggesting that Windows 7's behavior is not the "normal", but something abnormal that should likely be looked at as a bug. Thanks for your help, Judy
