Windows 7 desktop icons stop responding
Hello Everyone On one computer the desktop icons stop responding to click or right click almost as if they weren't there, also the taskbar don't respond to a windows key press. If you clic on the icons in the task bar or the start button if responds slowly but works. Stoping explorer.exe and restarting it with task manager clears the problem for a time, but it has become a daily occurrence. The open explorer windows work correctly and the others programs continue working normally. Other computer with the same configuration in hardware and software works correctly. Looking in the event viewer i find lots of informative events with an occasional error, none of which appears to be related to the problem. I used autoruns to see which explorer extensions were loaded but all appear legit and corresponding to the installed software. What else could i look for? Someone has had the same or similar problem?

Hi hhbuitrago, Does the issue occur in Clean Boot? If the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, you can continue to narrow down which entry is causing the issue. If the issue persists, you can use ShellExView to disable third party extension of Windows Explorer to check the issue. To do so, please refer to the steps below: 1. Download ShellExView v1.41 from the following link http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.zip Please Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability. 2. Right-click the "shexview.zip" file, select "Extract All", the Extraction Wizard will prompt. 3. Click Next, input "C:\ShellExView" (without the quotation marks) in the "Files will be extracted to this directory" textbox. 4. Click Next and click Finnish. 5. Open the "C:\ShellExView" folder and double-click the "shexview.exe" file. It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions. 6. Select all the non-Microsoft extensions in pink by press "Ctrl" in the keyboard. 7. Click the "Disable Selected Items" on the toolbar and click Yes. 8. Restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved. Also, you can create a new user account to see if the issue occurs. If the issue does not occur in a new user account, please move on by referring to: Fix a corrupted user profile Hope this helps. Thanks for the answer. Deactivating all the unneeded shell extensions installed apparently solved the problem, and after several days it has not occurred again. I could not determine more narrowly the culprit as the user don't want any of them back now that the computer is working normally again. So many thanks for your help.

have you tried enter Safe Mode and remove those shortcuts? 1. Restart the computer. 2. Keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears. 3. Choose Safe Mode by using the up and down arrows on your keyboard, and press Enter. 4. Start the computer in Safe Mode. (Note: In Safe Mode, your system display and Desktop will look and perform differently than in Normal Mode. This is only temporary. To return the system back to Normal Mode, we can simply restart the computer. ) Can you remove those icons under Safe Mode?
