Windows 7 creating temporary user profile
Installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 upgrade from Vista 64, already on a Windows 2008 SBS domain. Tried twice, and both times after configuring the desktop, reinstalling programs, etc., eventually by the next day, the user profile was lost, and logged in as a temporary user, and the profile was gone completely. Went back to Vista 64 Ultimate both times, and have not experienced it with Vista...EVER. I have seen others having similar problems, but no solutions offered from Microsoft at this time. I am going to keep running Vista, and hang onto my Windows 7 license and install when someone finds a remedy to this problem. I did use the same user account on the domain each time...not sure if this is related or not. Maybe I should have created a separate user profile with a different name. I was also considering reinstalling and leaving it OFF the domain...but defeats the purpose of having a domain. Very frustrated with this...

Looking at Active Directory on the 2008 Small Business Server, under the Profile tab, there are no values present for the User profile, or the Home folder. Not sure if this is where you mean for me to look. The error is as follows. I install Windows 7 as an upgrade, saving my old Vista to Windows.old folder. Now have to install applications again. Join to Small Business Server 2008 domain with the same name and profile, member of everything so as to have full control. Configure desktop, etc. After logging off for some time, return to computer to log on, and it takes a long time "preparing desktop", because it has lost the profile, and now is logging me on as a temporary profile. I cannot find any of the data in the root directory. So all efforts to configure new domain user profile are completely lost. Fortunately, I made a backup image and restored my Vista both times this has happened. I am a bit reluctant to install again at this point until someone comes up with some answers to help me avoid this. I have never had any problems with the identical profile on Vista x64 Ultimate. Only thing that changed was Windows 7 upgrade, and using the same user already on the domain. Any help is appreciated.

OK so you aren't using roaming profiles.... I would try either/both of the following to narrow down the issue. Running up Windows 7 on a clean machine and testing with the same user account. Using a different user account and configuring a profile on the same computer. Let me know how you go. Cheers

I am having this same problem. I am also having a hard time finding a solution. In response to your 2 questions Running up Windows 7 on a clean machine and testing with the same user account. Using a different user account and configuring a profile on the same computer. Yes I have reformatted the HD and did a clean reinstall of windows 7 twice. Happens every time with this one user. Not a roaming profile. Logging in with my domain account or local administrator - problem does not occur. Would love to know how to fix this.
