Windows 7 creating a network between my pc and laptop
So... I have a PC with Windows 7(ASUS P5Q-E mobo with 2 PCI Gigabit Ethernet Controller onboard) and a Notebook(Aspire 5741G). On my PC on the first Ethernet slot i have pluged in a cat5 cable whitch is connected on the other end to my Arris Touchstone Ethernet Modem...untill here everything is fine...i have internet connection on my PC and all that...On my Pc under control panel>Network and Sharing Center i have a "home network" created which is named "Network 4" on Local Area Connection(1) and "Acces Type : Internet"... Now i bought myself a "INTELLINET - cat.5e ftp stranded rj45/rj45,crossover" network patch cable,in order to hook up my note book to my PC and share resources but mostly to share the internet connection which i have on the PC. So what i did: With both my pc and notebook turned on, ived just pluged in the crossover cable i bought...one end to the pc (on the second ethernet slot )the other to the notebook(which has only one ethernet slot)...As a result of that on my PC appeard a second network "Unidentified network - Public network" on "Local Area Connection 2 - Acces Type:No Inernet access"...On my notebook appeard a "Network - Home network" on "Local Area Connection" with "Access type: No Internet Connection" After all that ived created a HomeGroup on my PC...and instantly on my notebook appeard to join John-PC(My PC)...i did...ived typed in the password, click next but a message pop after a bit:"Windows cannot set a Homegroup on this computer"... :( Whats wrong?what ived did wrong? Things ived try to resolve this problem: Delete on both PC and notebook the file idstore.sst...restarting both pc and notebook, make sure the service files "peer networking bla bla" and "homegroup bla bla" are running on both...didnt fix the problem Ived run "Troubleshoot Problems - Network and Internet" ALL of them(for both pc/notebook)...didnt fix anything...but the only thing that got my attention was that on both pc(for the local area connectin 2 only, the one thats going from the pc in to the notebook)and notebook the troubleshooter would say that i dont have no valid IP configuration, this is strange since i have the settings on IPv4 and IPv6 to auto obtain IP bla bla bla... P.S. Iam so sory for my english...is not my native language.

The easier configuration is to have equipment behind your modem to share the internet connection for all of you wired and wireless systems. If you prefer to daisy chain the two comptuers for the primary goal of internet access, you'll need to use Internet connection Sharing (ICS) on the windows 7 wired computer. This does leave the dependency that the windows 7 wired system will have to always be powered on for the Mobile device that is connected via cross-over cable to access the internet. With regard to the Homegroup quesion, My strength is in Enterprise support. I have not speant any time with the Homegroup configuration so I am unable to comment on that. I would tend to think that the Homegroup config is simply useful to make it easy to share resources between the systems. However, its not a requirement. Worgroups have been around for well over a decade so I would recommend that you get the ICS component working first, then worry about how to finilize the workgroup/homegroup setup. You may have to be patient for other responses. Not all posting get immediate attention. It all depends on the topic and who is online at the moment. Visit: anITKB.com, an IT Knowledge Base.
