Windows 7 computers not visible and cannot see others on the network
I have 2 Windows 7 boxes (one laptop and one desktop) plus a vista machine and a Windows Home server. All but the Home server is connectedvia a wireless connection. All machinescan access the web, etc. however only the home server is visible on the network (and the home server can access the other 3 machines). I cannot ping (by name or IP) any of the other machines and they don't show up in Windows Explorer. Before I put Windows 7 on the laptop and desktop everyone could see everyone.I tried creating a home group from the Win7 desktop and joining that from the laptop but the home group is not found. I also played with changing the wireless network from a "home network" to a "work network" without any luck.Any ideas?

I seem to remember that the Home group is only for Windows 7 machines. What I did was change the network settings to my normal network name.Go to Computer, right click, select Properties, and at the bottom of the window and you will see a place to change your network name (exactly the same way you would use in Vista).Hope this helps.Bob

Thanks Bob,Yes, I'm only expecting Home Group to work for the Win7 boxes but thought I should be able to still see those Win7 machines from Vista as well as from each other. All the machines are in the same workgroup. Is this what you mean by network name?Nathan

More info. I'm seeing this in thesystem event log of the Win7 laptop: EVENT ID 8003: The master browser has received a server announcement from the computerWIN7_DESKTOP that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{23CFC9E0-FFDA-4288-87F8-0900CB. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.

Yes, all computers with same network name, for instance - workgroup.I am not good with Browser Master issues, but that might be a normal message. If your network works I would ignore it for the time being until someone with indepth network knowledge chimes in.Also you are not setting up a Domain, right.Another minor thought, do you have a firewall.Bob
