Windows 7 cannot open a port
I have spent the last two hours trying to open a port for a remote control application . I have tomato 1.27 running on an asus wl500gP router . I am running windows 7 ultimate i have an Arris voip modem through comcast The problem is this, i forwarded the port correctly in tomato yet the port is still closed. I have tried the following: Enabling DMZ Disabling windows firewall by either the control panel or through services.msc Enabled UPNP in the application, it opens the port according to tomato yet external port testers still say its closed reset the router and pc numerous times hard reset the router Hooking PC directly into cable modem I believe that this is strictly a windows 7 issue now as the router is out of the equation. The only security software I have is Avira free edition, windows defender, and (disabled) windows firewall. Can anyone give me help as to why I cannot open a port? It would be greatly appreciated as I am leaving for a trip in 36 hours and would like to be able to remotely control this application

Eugene, Yes my the DMZ was pointed to my PCs address when I tried enabling it, now the router is completely out of the question as I am directly connected to the modem. Jack, It is the exact opposite, i needed a reply quickly and therefore posted to several forums, i don't know how that link got embedded though.

Hi If you have more than one computer behind the Router try it first through the LAN. Doing so takes the Router's routing truely out of the equation. Check all the IPs make sure that they stay the same and the ports indeed points to the correct computer. I doubt that it is a Win 7 problem per-se. In reality there is No closed port on a computer, the ports are there and they are ready to be used. What we call port close is actually port blocked by Firewall or similar application. Well yes, I did copy and paste it. I originally posted it, then copied my post and posted it here. I am sorry if this somehow offends you but I assure you this is an actual problem. Jack, I am currently connected directly to the modem, the router is not in use in any fashion. I am trying to decipher what exactly is blocking the ports, this is why i needed your help. This is the only forum that has been actively responding.

According to your initial post, you stated that your port is closed.. Question is, did you try to connect to the remote access application, or did you just do a port scan?

Hi, May I know what the remote control application you are using is? Please also check the following: 1. Run “netstat” to check if the port is in use. 2. Create firewall rule for this application: Firewall Rule Wizard 3. Configure port forwarding in the router referring to the user’s guide. Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

I have the same issue, win 7 ultimate 64. I have opened the ports on the router and evern bypassed the router. I have made rules in Win 7 firewall. I had the exact same issue with Vista. The only way I can get the ports to open, is to uninstall Windows 7 and install xp pro or just use my linux box. To me, windows 7 is barely a notch above Vista. I can not even host a teamspeak server with windows 7.
