Windows 7 cannot connect to internet after switching routers
Hi all, here's my frustrating situation: 1. I currently have 3 computers at home: a Win7 32bit PC, a WinVista 32bit PC, and a 13" Macbook Pro. I was previously using a DLink DIR655 router, and the 2 windows PCs were connected by wired ethernet, and the Macbook Pro was connected wirelessly. 2. I bought the Airport Xtreme router today, and installed the Airport Utility on my Win7 PC. I unplugged the DIR655, and plugged in the Airport Xtreme. 3. I ran the Airport Utility setup, and everything configured nicely. But for some reason, the Win 7 PC ended up connected to a "Unidentified Network" which was a "public network", and could not connect to the internet. 4. I turned on my Win Vista PC, and it immediately detected a new network, called it "Network 3" (set as a "home network", and I had no problems accessing the internet. Similarly, I turned on the macbook pro, and I connected via the Airport Xtreme wirelessly with no problems. 5. I tried switching the ethernet cables between the 2 PCs to no avail. I tried System Restore on the Win 7 PC but that didn't help either. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what could be wrong with the Win7 PC. I'm out of my wits!

try opening a command prompt and try ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew then ipconfig /flushdns but remember to run cmd as an administrator.

Your ISP may let you on their network based on the MAC address in the old router. Most routers will allow you to clone the mac address of another ethernet device. When I set up my system, my isp told me not to bother with a router in the initial setup, but rather connect my PC directly to the cable modem. After I got this one computer up and running, I connected the router and cloned that PC's mac address to the router. If this is the case, you can also call your ISP and give them the MAC address of the public side of your new router.

did you power cycle your broadband modem? I don't see that in anything you listed. On Tue, 18 Jan 2011 01:41:16 +0000, geekgeek wrote: >and could not connect to the internet. Barb Bowman http://www.digitalmediaphile.com

Hi GeekGeek Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Centre In the second section you should see a title "View your active networks" and immediately underneath that a reference to "Public Network" Click on the blue words "Public Network" and the Set Network Location Screen will appear. Select Home Network and then click close. Once the changes have been registered through you should be able to access the Internet via your new DLink DIR655 router. Hope that this helps Rgds PatThis posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. | Please remember to click "Mark as Answer" on the post that helps you, and to click "Unmark as Answer" if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
