Windows 7 build 7100 32bit: Files disappeared from hard drive
Hello, I am just wondering if my version of the RC has any known issues where files get deleted inadvertently. I went to a folder on a separate drive from my OS and 3 consecutive folders (that were probably contiguous in memory due to the fact that they were written simultaneously to the disk when it was initially empty) were missing. I tried running the check disk utility to scan for disk errors and none were found. I then downloaded file recover 7.5 from pctools.com and it found the folders and all of their contents with just a quick search. All the contents in the folders were in "Excellent" condition which to me means they were not overwritten. It seems like the file table got corrupted or something. The layout of the folders was as follows: E:\media\x E:\media\y E:\media\z\a E:\media\z\b The folders 'x', 'y', and 'a' all disappeared. However other folders such as 'b' and other folders after the first one in 'z' were still there. It seems unlikely that I accidentally deleted all those folders since they don't all sit in the same root folder. If there are known programs to cause issues please let me know. I don't have any critical files on this machine but I would prefer to not lose any of my data (even though it is backed up). Thanks, Brian

Some security programs, especially anti-spyware may delete the files as they consider that there are harmful components in the files. For example, Windows Defender has this function. In Windows Defender there are records that we could check. In Windows Defender, click History, click the View button and the details will be listed. You can set to trus the file that is considered to be malware by Windows Defender.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hi Arthur, Thanks for your reply but Windows Defender had no history of the files that are missing. The files are .avi file extensions by the way. Brian

Then click Advanced. 8. Click the button Find Now. 9. Wait for the process finishes. Then from the users list add the following users. ANONYMOUS LOGONBATCHCREATOR OWNEREveryone GuestsLOCAL SERVICENETWORKNETWORK SERVICESERVICESYSTEM 10. After selecting each user, choose Delete and Delete subfolders and files as the auditing entries. If you would like to check which account was trying to remove items in the folder, please open Event Viewer, check the Windows Logs\Security Log for detail information. If the user you are using have tried to remove the files, there must be a program that cause this issue.Arthur Xie - MSFT
