Windows 7 beta -- Print spooler app not working
I have installed windows 7 beta on my dell inspiron 9200 and it runs great. I love the upgraded OS, but have just one complaint:Why doesn't the print feature work for me??? Every time I try to connect a printer, it gives me an error saying that the print spooler is turned off. How do you turn it on? Why won't it work?? aaaaahhhhh...Anyone else have the same problem? help...

Hi,have you tried in installing the latest printer driver for your printer? Normally you can safely choose the printer driver for Windows Vista.Peter Forster, MVP Virtual Machine, Austria

Yes, I've tried downloading the latest driver for the printer, but it still doesn't want to work. I read somewhere that I should check what version of the driver it is, so that is going to be my next attempt. I hope I can find it. As far as what I can tell they say the driver version should be greater than .16 or .18 for an HP. My printer is an HP Photosmart 2575 and my computer is a Dell Inspiron 9200.

And just to be 100% sure - is the print spooler turned on? You didn't say if you checked. :)Click Start button --> type in Services.msc --> in the Services dialog, scroll down to Print Spooler and make sure it is Started and set to Automatic.Ned Pyle [MSFT] - MS Enterprise Platforms Support - Beta Team

Thanks everyone for your responses. I've tried everything you suggested, but nothing seemed to work. As a last-ditch effort I tried reinstalling the beta the copy my brother-in-law had and everything worked perfectly. It seems as though I had bad .iso file or something. I don't understand it, but it works fine now and I was able to add the printer without a hitch. Thanks again!!!

My entire system crashed due to a friggin corrupted print-spooler problem(s) that I never bothered to fix. LexMark and HP should BOTH be acknowledged. It's NOT a windows 7 issue nor a printer issue (threw away a perfectly GREAT printer due to this same issue)Your Print spooler is corrupted ... you have 2 choices do a format C or run a reliable reg cleaner and do a fresh install of your printer drivers. (not as good as a format but will keep you running for a while)I'm such a GREAT candidate for Win7beta since I'm going to format C this pile of dung anyway.

Well come to find out, the problem wasn't with W7 beta at all. After I posted last night, I installed my anti-virus and the problem came back. The problem was with my anti-virus, not the drivers or printer. I had installed Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0, but obviously its not compatible with W7 yet. I uninstalled the program and the print spooler error went away and I was able to connect to the printer and print. Just thought I'd share what I found to be the real problem. If anyone else has the problem, try uninstalling, or deactivating, your anti-virus/firewall. The printer spooler error should go away. Now for my anit-virus, I installed AVG free and it seems to be running without any quirks. It was an anti-virus that the howtogeek found to work with W7 beta, and its free lol. Thanks again for all of your input and help. This is a great forum.

Kaspersky is providing version 8 for the Windows 7 Beta if you want to stick with them. There's a link for them and a few others here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/antivirus-partners/windows-7.aspx.

Its really simple.....I figured it out with a friend of mine... same problem there.Open this directory : windows/system32/spoolerMake there a new directory/map named PrintersThen go start--> configuration under system you will see : detect and solve problemsunder hardware and sound press the printer button. Now the build -in fix will work.note. : you can also use the Microsoft windows vista fix (fix50216) for this, make it then compatible for vista to run under windows 7.That should do the trick also.

If you would like to find which printer driver cause the crash issue, I suggest you isolate each driver and run printing job. Please: 1. Open mmc in Start Search box. 2. Click File->Add/Remove snap-in 3. Add "Printer Management". Click Add "The Local Server". 4. Click Finish. 5. Expand Print Servers->[server name]. Click on Drivers. 6. Right-click on the first driver, choose "Set driver isolation"->"Isolated". 7. Start a printing job. 8. If the issue still occurs, change the isolation to System Default for this driver, then isolate the next driver and start printing job. You can find which driver is the root cause. You need to involve a Windows 7 compatible driver for Windows 7 clients. If the driver is packed, you can extract the driver pack and add the driver from printer server console. However, if the driver is included in an installation file, you may try the following method. 1. Install the driver on one of the Windows 7 clients. 2. Launch mmc from Start Search box. 3. Click File->Add/Remove Snap-in. 4. Add "Printer Management". Point to the server in "Specify the printer server". 5. Expand "Printer Management"->"Printer Servers"->"Drivers". 6. Right-click, then click "Add a driver". Please follow the instructions to add the Windows 7 printer driver. After doing so the driver should be added into the server. If the printer driver is not found, the driver should be not designed for enterprise environment. In this case you may need to add the printer from the client side manually. http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-All-in-One-Install-and/Windows-7-and-HP-Printer-Scanner-C4100/m-p/371619#M22106
