Windows 7 auto updates causing problems
I've had my Windows 7 32-bit toshiba laptop for all of 3 months now and i've run into problems with the automatic updates that happen when you shut down to computer. What happens is, I will shut it down, it will update, but the next time i go to turn it on, i get up to the point where you are supposed to see the desktop except all you see in a black screen with the cursor in the middle. has anyone else encountered this problem? I'm assuming it is something to do with the updates because I do a system restore to the night before and it works perfectly fine. any assistance or discussion is appreciated.

Hi Luke_Ainsworth, What were the exact updates you installed? Please go to Windows Update and check what updates are available at this time. In my opinion, this issue might occur because of conflicts. Please refer to the following Knowledge Base article to perform a Clean Boot to troubleshoot the issue: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 Hope it helps. Styx

There was one update that was repeatedly failing to install and that was the Security Update for Microsoft Office Powerpoint 2007 (KB982158) My solution so far is to stop the auto updates and that has worked for me.

MIKE So far my solution has been to just turn off the auto update. if there is an update that is repeatedly not installing, you can manually not install that update
