Windows 7 auto update issue
Lenovo laptop. Full battery & running on mains power, Windows 7 RC Build 7100 I was busy doing some internet banking when suddenly my laptop restarted. The normal orderly shutdown and restart, except I didn't ask it to restart. As it restarted a message came up to say Don't turn off the computer, Automatic updates are completing installation, or words to that effect. I think someone better have a good look at the update process as this is a MAJOR problem.

HiWere you running anything in Full Screen mode when this happened? When automatic updates are enabled, if an update requires a restart to finish installing, you should see a notification dialog pop up in the lower/right corner of the screen. This dialog has a timer that defaults to 10 minutes before the computer restarts. You canchange the restart time up to a maximum of 4 hours. We had one other user that experienced this problem when running a video in full screen mode, which covered up this dialog box.Let us know.Thank You for testing Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP

Bryce - This is why it's generally best NOT to have automatic updates turned on to download and install things. I always set my Windows Update to notify me only of when an update is available so I can grab it when I'm not in the middle of writing a lengthy War and Peace length post somewhere.

Thank You for testing Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP I forgot to mention, this occurred on the X86 version. I was not running in full screen, I was using the SeaMonkey browser to do some internet banking at the time. I did not see any popup (and I have seen that on my desktop x64 Win7 build 7100) so there was no warning, it just closed the open apps and did a restart. I was not impressed. I have had this issue with winXP on my production machines and so disabled auto update installation. It has been very annoying to leave a PC processing something over night only to find next morning that it restarted and killed the process. Is the answer here to disable auto-update or are are you actually going to fix the problem? Windows should ALWAYS have a positive input to acknowledge the shutdown before proceeding. Regards, Bryce

I agree with Bryce and have this same very annoying shutdown / restart without warning with my Windows 7 64 X2 PC (Acer Aspire 5534 laptop bought in Nov. '09 btw, though it doesn't seem to be a hardware or manufacturer issue.) I'd have preferred the "automatic update install" setting Microsoft recommends, provided I got a loud and clear warning (not some obscure hidden message) before shutdown, with enough time to opt to restart later. I used to get this in my earlier windows XP machine.Since that doesn't seem to be an option yet with Windows 7 (correct me if I'm wrong) I'm following the advice of Wolfie2k6 above, changing my Windows update setting to "download update automatically but let me decide whether to install" and hope it solves the problem.Regards,Sandip

I don't want to be rude, so I won't. But I should be. Windows just should not have the right to restart your computer automatically (when there's no user input). It is very very, VERY annoying even when you do not doing something importat. For example, you need to download something big, don't have a fast internet connection, so you start the download late at night and go to sleep, expecting to have it downloaded next morning. It's awful when you realize that your computer has been turned on since 3am and has done nothing, just sucking the electricity. Yeasterday, I 've been watching a movie (at fullscreen ofc), and all of a sudden the pc has restarted. It's very annoying, when you're enjoying the movie, and this happens. VERY VERY VERY annoying. I have now found a way to turn off this auto restart, need to test it though: http://win.downloadatoz.com/tutorial/5054,disable-annoying-auto-restart-after-windows-7-update.html But I think it just isn't right to be the default configuration of windows to auto restart. It's just bad. If no user input is done, then the pc has to wait, until the user clicks restart or later, and not to restart. I really hope, that this will be fixed in the future, because I really want to go to US, and meet some important people at Microsoft and punch them into faces, because it annoys me so much. Well, at the end, I was rude a bit. Sorry for that, next time it'll be worse.

There is a way to update the Registry to do the same thing but I have not spent the time to figure it out. If someone wants to look into it, start with this article: http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_access_the_policy_editor_in_windows_7_home_editions.html and you'll be directed to a spreadsheet with a number of registry setting.
