Windows 7 and XP, workgroup computers not communicating
I'm trying to get my Windows 7 laptop to share files with my old XP laptop, and I'm not having any luck. On the Win7 machine, I can see the XP machine, but when I click on it (in Network), all I get is this: Windows cannot access %computername% Error code: 0x80070035 The network path was not found. I then launch the network diagnostic (from that last pop-up), and get the following message: Problems found file and print sharing resource (%computername&) is online but isn't responding to connection attempts A look at "view detailed information" gives me the following: The remote computer isn't responding to connections on port 445, possible due to firewall or security policy settings, or because it might be temporarily unavailable. Windows couldn't find any problems with your firewall on your computer. On the Windows XP machine, I can't see the Windows 7 machine under "Workgroup" at all. I can, however, ping both machines. Also, I have made sure that the XP machine has TCP 445 open in the File and Printer Sharing exception in Windows Firewall. I'm not sure if this is true for Windows Firewall in Win7. In Windows 7, here's my Homegroup settings: Turn on network discovery Turn on file and printer sharing Turn on sharing so anyone with network acces can read and write file in the Public folders. Media streaming is on. Use 128-bit encryption to help protect file sharing connections (recommended) Turn off password protected sharing Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections (recommended). Those are all the options selected. Also, my network is set up in such a way that the firewall in the router may be causing the problem. I have a broadband modem/router combo, but plugged into its ethernet port is another router, a linksys WRT54G, which is actually just acting as a switch/wireless access point. Hi, Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Try to access the share folder by “\\XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX<IP Address>” and see how it works. 2. Disable simple file sharing on Windows XP computers How to disable simple file sharing and how to set permissions on a shared folder in Windows XP 3. Boot the Windows XP to clean boot and see how it works. How to perform advanced clean-boot troubleshooting in Windows XP 4. Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on both computers: 1) Go to “Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections”. 2) Right-Click on the connection and choose Properties. 3) Click “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Version 4” in the list. 4) Click Properties, and then click Advanced. 5) On the Advanced TCP/IP settings windows, go to “WINS” tab. 6) Under NetBIOS setting, click “Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP”, and then click OK. Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT
