Windows 7 and Windows 2003 SP2 - mandatory profile issue
Hi, I don't know how many people here tried to setup a mandatory profile for Windows 7 client in Server 2003 (Standard Edition) SP2. But I must say it's a nightmare or I am stupid enough not to do it by myself. I work in a school where students need mandatory profile with Read & Execute permission. So, they can't make any changes in the profile. Currently, we are running Windows Server 2003 SP2 and XP SP3 client. Our manager wants me to test Windows 7 and find out all the issues and work around before deploying Windows 7 clients. I have done followings: 1. In our server - mandatory profile location is (\\server-name\profiles$\high-school\) for XP 2. I prepared Windows 7 client default users as per requirement, joined in the domain, put the computer in proper OU. Copy the default user profile to \\server-name\profiles$\high-school.V2 (with authenticated users permission). 3. Students login in windows 7 client and download the mandatory profile from \\server-name\profiles$\high-school.V2. When the logout, it says can't sync profile to the server. That is fine with me. Because, the profile is locked, only read & Execute permission is given. 4. I logout and login as local administrator and delete the folder from C:\users (e.g. student15 folder is created when student15 logged). I restart the computer, login as student15 again. But it doesn't download the profile anymore. So, it creates a tmp profile. It keeps doing it no matter how many times i restart the PC. Now, my question is if we want to support Windows 7 - do we need to install any patch in 2003 server to support Windows 7? What are the possible things I can try? Any documentation or articles link will be very helpful. Thanks.

Hi, To change a profile to mandatory user profile in Windows 7, please refer to the following Knowledge Base article and try the steps of the section “How to turn the default user profile into a mandatory user profile in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2”: How to customize default user profiles in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2 In addition, I would like to share the following with you for your reference: Managing Roaming User Data Deployment Guide Hope this helps. Apparently, with Windows 7, Microsoft tied the logon accounts to the registry directly without automating the registry cleanup upon deletion. They (MS) suggest only removing profile through the control panel. I found this resolution on another forum (I forget which one): On the PC where you manually deleted the profile, you will need to open regedit and browse to the following key: HKLM\Software\Micrososft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList Expand the ProfileList folder and look for an entry the ends with .bak - this is the backup for the profile you deleted. After you delete this key, you will be able to login back in with that acount.

That's what I have done before holiday. Now, I am thinking to run a automated registry fix when user login. Thanks.
