Windows 7 Wireless polling
Hi i am new to the forums so sorry if this has been said before or if this is in the wrong place.I really really hope the devs look at these posts (I dont know how they would or could though as there are soo many ... Anyway). Since vista we have had this super annoying problem with the wireless network polling every 60 seconds or so for another wireless network in range. Could we please just have a nice on off radio button to disable this feature, my computer is a desktopI am never going to need this feature for my desktop, granted its a nice idea for roaming laptops, but the desktop lets just get a connection and keep it.The problem comes when playing games online the lag is annoying. Rather then having these hack fixes (vista anti lag etc ) I would much rather the OS just have the option to nock this feature off, as im sure many other users would. Thanks

HelloIn Windows 7 if you are connected to your most preferred wireless network or if you have the "automatically connected to more preferred networks" setting disabled in your wireless profile (default setting on new profiles) we will not issue the periodic 60 second scan request to the wireless driver anymore. On the Windows 7 RC build and beyond simply move your desktop's home wireless profile to the top of your wireless profile list or set the auto-connect bit as I mentionedto avoid this scan. Please let me know if that answers your question or if you have any more wireless issues to report.ThanksJohn Archer

HelloCan you please clarify a few points for me?1. What WLAN device are you using? Can you include the output of NETSH WLAN SHOW DRIVER for me?2. Are you using Windows 7 RC build or later?3. Can you explain how you are validating that the polling is happening? Are you using a sniffer or some other method?ThxJohn

Thanks for the information - I will work on a local repro tomorrow. I verified the expected OS behavior on an Intel 4965 platform today. With heavy data streaming and a constant ping to gateway I see the scan happening when the "auto connect to more preferred" bit is set on the profile and this behavior goes away when the bit is disabled. However, a driver may still issue a scan whenever they wish to their hardware, which may be what is happening here. Either way we'll get to the bottom of this and at least work with Broadcom (if needed) to notify them of any errant behavior. Please stay tuned.-John

I will unable to reproduce the problem on the Broadcom adapter using a simple ping test. I will be out tomorrow but one of my SDETs will attempt a repro with a wireless sniffer to look specifically for background scans on the 60 second interval, versus using a ping test. I will update this thread later this weekend once I have the results of his testing.ThanksJohn

I never have this problem. I just uncheck connect to more preferred networks if available, and I have never experienced this at all.

Adam M do you have the same wireless card as us (Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapater) if so can you let us know where you got your drivers from etc. Thanks

I've been experiencing the same problem since I installed build 7100 on the weekend. I also picked up a Linksys wireless G PCI adapter, and will get the driver information and post it. It has been a few days since the last post from John Archer, has there been any update on if you guys have been able to duplicate the issue? I was in the mood to do some tinkering, and I managed to get rid of my lag spikes. After doing some reading, I created a restore point and installed drivers from the Ralink website. I don't use any special software to keep track of the connection, as I was able to get consistent lag results just using ping. Here are the driver details that worked for me (I didn't install the Ralink wireless management software, just the driver) C:\Users\John>NETSH WLAN SHOW DRIVER Interface name: Wireless Network Connection 2 Driver : 802.11G Wireless PCI Adapter Vendor : Ralink Technology Corp. Could Johnbd or anyone using the sucessfuly rail link driver please advice on which one to download. Thanks
June 27th, 2009 11:09pm

Sorry about that, I guess that would be useful information :). I went to this link http://www.ralinktech.com/ralink/Home/Support/Windows.html and downloaded the driver 2.1.3.0 dated 12/09/2008. After the install, Windows doesn't automatically install the driver and won't recognize it as an updated driver when you scan for updates. I had to go into the device manager, update the driver, manually browse for the adapter, and select the Ralink "802.11G Wireless PCI Adapter" driver. - John ------ EDIT ------- I also forgot to mention that I have also unchecked the option to have it search for a more preferred network if one is available.

Thanks JohnThis rings a bell with what I had to do with vista, however I also had to use vista anti lag (some application). Hopefully like in your situation the driver will just do the trick.

Yep it works a treat, well done John for finding that.Would suggest all users who experienced the problem to get the above mentioned driver, its a little fidly to put on as windows wont detect it etc (as mentioned) but im sure all the users in here can handle it.Thanks again.

I'm using the 64 bit of Windows 7, build 7100. Are you using the latest build (the 76xx or whatever it is)? Is the polling issue still a problem for some Linksys devices? What are the results of your NETSH WLAN SHOW DRIVER ? - John

I'm thinking i'm still getting the polling, because it seems like while playing aion online beta, i get maybe 30seconds to a minute of "normal" like, interspersed with 30 seconds or so of EXTREME (talking about 4-5 seconds between action and result in game) lag.

Im using the same W7 64bit 7100build, I have the Linksys WRT54GS router, and was having problem with D/C... I did a simple Firmware upgrade on the router, rebooted my PC and have not had the problem anymore.... I will say this, I used my laptop which is on the same network to upgrade... and once I restarted both PC and laptop this seemed to solve it for me. Good luck, maybe it will work for you! ;)

Good luck, maybe it will work for you! ;) I dont think this is my issue either, i'm 99% certain that our router is built into our dsl modem, it's a westell versalink, whenever i connect directly into the default gateway through a web browser it's that software that comes up, however i did make sure that the firmware is up to date.
July 18th, 2009 2:15pm

update: I finally broke down, and grabbed the modem/router from downstairs, so i could hardwire it into my system. So far (about 10 minutes of game time in aion) everything seems better. So, this leads us to what? Either a driver issue (possible, but i'd say, unlikely, since i've tried both of the reccomended drivers, the linksys xp 64 bit, and the ralink, which, while it helped with general disconnects, not the lag spikes) It could be a firmware issue on the router, but i would suspect that it would affect both wireless and wired the same. or it could be something, internally with windows.

I also have a Linksys Wireless-G PCI and have struggled with the lag spike issue in Windows 7 - 2 second pings to my wireless router each minute. Installing the RaLink driver as described earlier seems to have fixed it based on continuous ping readings, which is a great relief. Thanks a lot!
