Windows 7 Wireless Networking Snafu - changed router won't prompt for new wifi key
I am running Windows 7 home edition. A service technician came to replace the router. It has the same router name but a different Wi-Fi key. When I try to connect to the wireless network now it says "Windows was unable to connect to 2Wire463." It does not prompt me to let me enter in the new wi-fi key. I went to Manage Wireless connections and tried to enter the information in Manually, but when I do that and click on the Network Connections icon there is a red X next to the router name and when I click on it I can't connect because it says "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network." When I try to connect automatically it simply refuses and never prompts for the key. I am having the same identical problem on a Windows Vista Home laptop as well.

I should add I've tried resetting the router, rebooting the router, and restarting my computers.

Hi, Please perform the following steps in the exact same order listed below: 1) Disconnect all the cables connected to the back of the router including the power cable. 2) Connect only the power cord back after 1 minute and press and hold the reset button located on the back of the router for 15 seconds( A pin can be used to prick but make sure that the router is powered on during this process) 3) Turn off the Router. Leave all the cables unplugged. 4) Open network and sharing centre. On the left side menu, look for "Manage Wireless Networks". Once clicked on it, it will show the list of wireless profiles located on the local machine.Select each of them and click on remove. Once done, Shut down the system. 5) Connect the cables back to the router but make sure that the first cable should be the power cable. Also if possible connect an extra ethernet cable from the back of the router to the computer ( Any of the 4 ports on the back of the router can be used). 6) Once all the cables are connected Turn on the system and wait for the system to load into windows. Type CMD in start search and hit enter 7) A black command prompt window will open up. Type IPCONFIG and hit enter. Look for the default gateway under " Ethernet adapter local area connection" 8) Now open up an Internet explorer page and type the number for default gateway in the address field and hit enter. It would prompt you to enter a user name and password( Use: Admin, Admin or Admin/Password) and hit enter. 9) Ideally the router page should open up and you need to look for settings under wireless. Since the router is reset to factory , by default the the network right now would be unsecured. 10) You can give any name for the new wireless network and also select the type of security that you wanna use. Once done, save the changes. 11)Now try to open network connection and view for available wireless networks. The network that you just now created should be listed. Once clicked on it, it would prompt you for the password. Make sure that you enter the same password that you set on the router page. 12) Follow the steps 4, 11 on the other system.

The router name is the same but Windows will not recognize it as the same since the router is different. Delete the wireless network name from your computer and then try to reconnect.

delete the connection from manage wireless network screen and recreate it If that doesn't work then simply change the name of the router (wireless connection broadcast name)

Hi, Please delete this connection's profile in Network and sharing Center, then try to reconnect to it. This will prompt for the password.Juke Chou TechNet Community Support

Hey thanks for this. I was having trouble connecting to a wireless network; it would not prompt me for a password. I have multiple devices connected to the network but this one computer would not connect. I was able to, thanks to your tutorial, go to "Manage Wireless Networks" and enter the authentication manually. Of course the OS should prompt me for that but not much I can do about that now. Thanks a bunch!
