Windows 7 Virtual WiFi Access Point
Hi, 1) I have a scenario to change channel on which Virtual Access point is started. Is it possible to change the Channel number of virtual Access point(softAP) ? 2) I search some site i found that Virtual Access point's channel is depends's on, On which channel physical WiFi adapter is connected to access point. I observed the following behavior in my machine a) If WiFi adapter connected to the Access point on some 'x' Channel, Virtual Access point also uses the same channel 'x' to start access point. b)If WiFi adapter didn't connected any network, If you start the Virtual Access point, It uses some to start Access point. this Default Channel is different for different type of devices.( in my case it is channel 1 for atheros Usb wifi adapter, channel 11 for Atheros card bus) Can any body tell me, from where the virtual access point get this default Channel? Thanks

The drivers for the devices pre-set the channels. Also, the region settings. Countries regulate which frequencies are available for use. Lastly, Windows. WiFi standards typicallly default to 1 and 11 in the 2.4gHz frequency. The virtual port is there to allow other devices to connect to the host computer - "Windows 7 installs a virtual device if a Hosted Network capable WLAN adapter is present on the PC. This virtual device shows up in the "Network Connections Folder" as 'Wireless Network Connection 2' with a Device Name of 'Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport adapter' if the PC has a single WLAN adapter. This allows the virtual device to be used solely for performing software access point (SoftAP)connections.”

Hi, Based on my research, you can set the SoftAP channel. The Wi-Fi NIC picks the SoftAP channel & generally picks the same channel as the infrastructure network (Internet AP) that it is connected to.Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.
