Windows 7 VPN Connects but wont show computers on network it connects too
I am just setting up Windows 7 for a customer. They work from home most of the time. I have set a VPN connection up so they can connect to the office which works fine.I can ping the server and it replied. The internet works fine connected to the workplace. So why is it when I click on Start- Computer - Network it does not show all the computers on the network at this persons work??Also I am trying to understand all this new search style in Windows 7. Is there a simple way in which you can just search for an IP address?? All of this is for me to do one thing. I want to map a drive from a computer on this persons network at work. But I am trying to set it all up from her home and not in the workplace.Hope someone can help. Jason

Although you connect to the work site via VPN, the computer is not located to the work site so you cannot access other computers via Network. You may connect to a work computer via Remote Desktop after connecting to VPN and you can access other computers in Network from the remote computer in Remote Desktop.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Jason, you may need to specify the same workgroup on the customers machine. see here

Browsing for PCs on the remote network may or may not work. You can use the UNC to access shares though...\\ServerName\ShareNameExamples:\\Catonsville\Public\\192.168.1.10\PublicMS-MVP Windows Desktop Experience, "When all else fails, read the instructions"

Hi, When they were in the office I went in and i mapped a shared drive from the server. When they get home and connect via VPN into the office connection, they used to click on the mapped drive and it would open. (On XP this is)Now when they are at home and they connect to the office and they click the mapped drive it complains about user name and password. On XP we got around this issue by searching for the server by IP when the VPN was connected and mapping it by IP number rather than searching for computer name and mapping the drive that way.I dont want to access the computer itself eg. Remote desktop connectionAll I want to be able to do is see this mapped drive over the vpn connection like you could in xp and vista.Hope this explains it a little better.ThanksJason

Jason, On the win7 boxIn the Advanced sharing settings page of Network and sharing center, you need to have it set as Work/Home profile. Try Make sure computers are the same workgroup for now (you can change it later)Enable network discoveryTurn on file and print sharingTurn off password protected sharingTurn on Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computersYou can try to ping the server name and get the IP that wayYou could also use a port scanner.when you know the IP type \\ipaddress in the search box and it should open the shares on the server.and you should use a batch file to map the drfive for use after the VPN connectsnet use s: \\5.x.x.x\Share_Name /user:someuser_name password /persistent:no

Hi thanks for the help, i figured this out an hour ago.I connected in, then clicked computer, then map network drive.Where it asks you to choose the letter and what you want to map i chose the letter and underneath typed "\\server ip\ folder name".It mapped the drive no problem, so touch wood everything should be ok from here. Thanks
