Windows 7 VL installed on a Windows Vista branded computer not activating
Hi, We installed a brand new KMS server running Server 2008 R2. All Windows updates have been done. Windows was activated using a "Windows Server 2008 Std/Ent KMS B" key. A Windows 7 Enterprise image has been created using VL media from the Microsoft VL website No CD key was included in the unattended.xml file as I thought that it defaults to KMS if no key is present. It has worked without issue so far with the computers entering the "Grace" period as the KMS server has not activated 25 clients yet as exected. So far all laptops that have had this image pushed out to it where branded with Win 7 OEM keys. I just pushed it out to a Laptop branded with a Vista OEM key. Upon first login it proceeds to tell me that I may be a victim of software counter fitting. Is this normal? I would have thought that as I used VL media that I am licensed for with a KMS server that is also licensed correctly and activated that it shouldn't matter what computer I install this on and what the the computers OEM was. I have done a slmgr /dlv on both machines. The first one below is on a Windows 7 OEM key machine which shows it is in the grace period as expected. The second is from the Vista OEM machine. Entries at Application ID:, Extended PID:, Partial Product Key: where all the same from both outputs. Installation ID: was the only one that varied. I know I keep mentioning Vista and Windows 7 OEM keys but at no point were these keys entered. Only VL media was used. And only the KMS server has had a KMS key entered. No CD keys were entered into the image or unattneded.xml file. Windows 7 Branded Machine Microsoft (R) Windows Script Host Version 5.8 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
