Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor doesn't work with proxy server
Is there a way to get the Windows 7 upgrade advisor to run when the internet connection goes through a proxy server ? All our company PCs access the internet through a proxy server and it is not an option to turn it off.

You need to configure the server for all connections. Please refer the following article. How the Windows Update client determines which proxy server to use to connect to the Windows Update Web siteArthur Xie - MSFT

Thank you for the response Arthur but I don't understand what you're telling me to do. Our Automatic updates run from an internal server via WSUS. If I want to manually go to Windowsupdate I can do so from internet explorer no problem. The proxy settings are all set correctly in internet explorer. It is only the Windows 7 upgrade advisor that doesn't work. Specifically how and where do I tell Windows 7 upgrade advisor what the proxy settings are.

technocrate, I know for a fact it's the proxy server that's the problem, that's why I asked the question how do you get Windows 7 upgrade advisor to recognise the proxy. It doesn't come up with the proxy server login box, and even if the IE connection is already open the Windows 7 upgrade advisor won't recognise it, it must have it's own internal way of going to the internet and doesn't go through IE.

You have configured proxy settings for IE. However, other programs may not have this configuration. Therefore you need to make sure that the proxy configuration is applied for the whole system. You can try the command “netsh winhttp set proxy” Netsh Commands for Windows Hypertext Transfer Protocol (WINHTTP)Arthur Xie - MSFT

I ran "netsh winhttp set proxy" with the proxy settings, and then did "show proxy" to confirm it had set and it returned the settings as they should be but the upgrade advisor still doesn't work. The message returned is "Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor was unable to reach the Microsoft Server for compatibility information. Check your internet connection and try again later". The internet connection is working fine so it is something else that is still stopping the Upgrade Advisor from connecting back to Microsoft.

I found this on another thread, from Richard Zadorozny, "Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor currently doesn't support those types of proxies." As Microsoft are preventing thousands of users from using their own tool for checking if systems are Win 7 compatible, does this mean they will be extending support for Win XP, with SP4 ? !!!

You can try doing a clean boot then running the upgrade advisor. To do this go to Start, Run, type “msconfig” and press ENTER. In the System Configuration screen go to the Services tab, check the Hide all Microsoft services checkbox, click Disable All, go to the Startup tab and click Disable All. Reboot and try again. To return to a normal state, go back to the System Configuration utility and select Normal Startup on the General tab.
