Windows 7 Ultimate Blue Screen (intermittent)

Hello all, Since installing Win7 on my Dell XPS M1330, every few days I get an intermittent blue screen. Once was while the computer was in use, and several other times while it was “at sleep”. The blue screens seem to be happening more frequently lately. The system crashed both yesterday and today. I see no option to upload those file here, however. Any help you may offer to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated. I did run Macfee cleanup earlier this evening (which, among other things, cleans orphan entries from the registry), but it's too soon to tell if it will be of any use. Many thanks, RJ

Hi RJ,if it helps you to narrow down the problem : Bugcheck 9f (0x9F) (DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE) "indicates that the driver is in an inconsistent or invalid power state"; Parameter 1 (BCP1) = 3 (0x3) indicates the cause "A device object has been blocking an IRP for too long a time." (MSDN Library, Windows Driver Kit) Maybe you only have to check your power cables, as some device seems to be unresponsive from time to time.Mobile AMD64 3000+, VIA Apollo K8T800 chipset, 1 G RAM, ATIRadeonMobility 9700, 20x DVDRW, C:XPSP3 (50G),D:WIN7 (30G),F:DATA (250G)

Hi Sanmartin, Thanks so much for the reply. The computer is a laptop which I leave turned on and plugged in.... So it is probably not the power cable. I'm wondering, however, if it could be the "power management" of the system that is causing the problem. It's a big mystery to me what goes on behind the scenes, but I suspect the power management system acts in different ways depending on which "power options" I select. Currently I am using the default settings called "Dell Recommended" from Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options The basic power settings under that plan is to (when on AC power) to dim the screen in 5 minutes, turn off the display after 30 minutes, and to put the computer to sleep after 2 hours. There is a link to "Advanced Power Options" that has hundreds of different combinations, however. I would not know where to begin in changing some of these settings... Any ideas which of these basic or advanced options I should look at. (And that is assuming you agree the power management system might be causing the blue screens.) Many thanks! RJ P.S. Hi Andre, Thanks for the reply. I did not know about Windows SkyDrive... Thanks for teaching me about that. I did as you suggested and uploaded the three files generated by the bluescreen. Hi RJ, the crash ( DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE ) is caused by the driver netw5v32.sys . This driver belongs to your Intel Wireless WiFi Link Adapter driver. You are using the version from March 2009. Hi André, Wunderbare Arbeit! Danke! I ran the Manual Diagnostics Tool and as you may have expected, the device failed the initial hardware test. Going to the Intel website, I let their tool diagnose their Intel Wireless Wifi Link 4965AGN. Again it was no surprise that the tool suggested a driver update. Their latest driver was last modifed on 28-Dec-2009 and released this month (Jan 2010). This installation went smooth as silk. If I understood what Intel installed correctly, there was a whole "suite" of drivers included in the download package. I then ran the Manual Diagnostics Tool again, and everything passed with flying colors! Many thanks for your kind assistance and kudos to you for your in-depth knowledge! Hi André, One more thing... I'm so impressed by your knowledge, I wonder if you would be interested at looking at another Win7 upgrade issue... I see you have responded with over 200 answers here on technet. Of course, I know I'll have to file another "question", but perhaps you could suggest which thread I should use. So here's the quick story... After migrating to Win7, I'm having problems with the Sigma Tel audio drivers on my Dell XPS M1330 laptop (the same machine you just helped me "heal"). Looking on the Dell forums, I found that I'm not the only person having problems. It appears that Sigma Tel was sold to a company called IDT. Unlike Intel, this company refuses to provide drivers directly to consumers and tells everyone they must get drivers through Dell. The problem is that Dell is thumbing their nose at hundreds of customers who bought these expensive laptops just a few months ago. Dell is telling us we have voided our right to support by migrating from Vista to Win7! You can see the thread here: http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19306967/19637451.aspx#19637451 I'm Euro888 on that site too. In my case, programs like Skype will no longer work when plugging a microphone into the Sigma Tel audio jacks on the front of the computer. Since I do a lot of Skype calling to Germany, I'm pretty much "up the creek". Dell's "solution" is to simply ignore our pleas for help. If you are interested in taking a look at this, let me know and I will "ask a question" here in Technet. If we could get drivers somewhere, the entire problem would go away. Perhaps with your great knowledge base, you might have some ideas. Best wishes... RJ
