Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on desktop. USB External drive for backup. Desktop backs up OK. Notebook on home network Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. Notebook fails on backup to drive on desktop. Cannot write to the drive, error code 0x80780047. Properties set on drive for Everyone Full Control. Passowrd set in backup. I can write to the drive from the notebook but backup can't write to the drive. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Wayne,Most backup issues can be caused by conflicts with third party software especially the security ones, I suggest disable any antivirs\firewallon both Desktop and Notebook to test it. Or you can perform the following steps in case other software is the culprit:1. Click "Start", type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in the open box to start the System Configuration Utility. 2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". 4. Click "OK" to restart your computer to Selective Startup environment. 5. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK.6. Check whether or not the issue still appears in this environment. Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't affect the system or other programs. We may still manually run these programs later. Is the backup successful?

I use MSE. I disabled both with no success before I even posted this. I know of the issues involved with MSE.

Hi Wayne,It occurs to me that you aredoing across-platform backup, check this out:Quote: "Most programs designed for a computer running a 32-bit version of Windows will work on a computer running 64-bit versions of Windows. Notable exceptions are many antivirus programs, and some hardware drivers."It is likely that your backup contains the exceptions above, thus the backup won't start at all.

The error code is NOT mistyped. I received this code on 2 different machines numerous times.I solved the problem. Backup and restore will create seperate folders on the external drive for the machines being backed up. However the system image is placed outside the folders and the rest of the backup is placed inside the folder. Backup and restore only allows for 1 system image to be stored on a drive. When you try to backup a second machine, the backup starts to write to the correct folder. When Backup trys to save the system image, it finds already exists and the error mentioned is presented. I simply partitioned the drive for each of my machines and the backup runs perfectly, fully automated on a schedule in the middle of the night. I configured Task Manager on each machine to wake up the machines prior to the scheduled backup.
