Windows 7 System Notification Service failure
We just installed 217 Windows 7 computers. While configuring them for our domain we noticed that we got "System Event Notification Service failed to start" ballon popup when we logged in with our admin account after adding the computers to our Windows 2003 domain. The error does not come up until the computers are added to the domain. I've checked various system logs and found a series of service failures in the system log. It appears that if the computer if left at the login screen for a couple minutes the standard users can login; as the system noticiation service is set to restart after 2 minutes by default. After that time elapses the service shows as starting without issue in the event log. We're getting several messages in the event log about the computer not being able to contact a domain controller. These messages seem out of place because they are logged before the computer even contacts the DHCP server to get an IP address so there would be no avenue for the computer to reach a domain controller. I've researched all over the internet and found the netsh command. This does not appear to have an impact on our problem. We install several programs as part of our group policy as best we can tell these are not related to the issue. Can anyone give us an idea of where to look to investigate this problem? We've tried disabling the GP for these computers and that did not seem to have an impact either. We do use a WSUS server that is configured via GP. I have seen some indication that updates cause this issue. Has anyone else experienced any issues with this?

Most of this kind of issues are caused by background programs, especially security programs such as antivirus. I suggest you temporary disable antivirus on one of the client to test. If the issue does not occur, you may need to contact the publisher of the antivirus for solutions. If the issue persists after disabling antivirus, please troubleshoot in Clean Boot Mode. Perform a clean startup to determine whether background programs are interfering with your game or programPlease remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. We've tried uninstalling our virus software (AVG 9 Network Edition) and I believe my techs tried adding one to the domain before adding AVG with the same result. AVG is pretty popular I can't imagine that this wouldn't be all over the interweb if it was a standing issue with AVG. Only other programs we install via GP is... Adobe 8 reader; Shockwave/flash player; USBDLM (which we don't need on 7 and have disabled the service) ; and office 2007 comp pack But... the instant you add it to the domain and reboot... before software could possibly be installed the error already exisits... It almost has to be a GP policy that causes some sort of damage that isnt' reversed with GP is withdrawn form the computer account. Any ideas or direction would be appericated.

I have found the blog that may help us. Please see: Cluster service failure after AD lockdown... - Active Directory, Cluster and other fun stuff... - Site Home - TechNet Blogs If it does not help, I suggest you enable the policy “Always wait for the network at computer startup or logon” under Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\LogonPlease remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
