Windows 7 Sync Center - Why is it so horrible?
I've got an army of users that are getting moved over from windows XP pro to Windows 7 Enterprise. I've got the following folders re-directed to a DFS share: My Documents Desktop and for windows 7 computers: Favorites My XP machines have absolutely no problems with offline folders, syncing, going offline, coming online, etc, they work fine my windows 7 machines: they are constantly logging conflicts that shouldn't be conflicts at all, if you tell the conflict resolution center to keep the newer file, it doesn't remove the conflict from the list of conflicts but appears to do what you asked of it as a resolution, it's constant logging errors about files that have not changed, and the users have to go into offline files, and Shift-delete the files from their offline caches. I can't keep any of the windows 7 sync center icons "green" every single machine is either a red x or a yellow triangle. This thing f-ing blows. Does anyone have any hints about how to get it to work properly, or at this point a 3rd party tool that has such features as : conflict resolution that works Log files worth a damn a central management tool for handling conflicts on an army of laptop please I'm begging you, this product is not working, and i need a solution.

Have you had any success with this? I too am feeling the pain. I thought it might have perhaps been an issue with syncing to 2003 R2, but also seeing this at another site syncing to 2008 R2. There just doesn't seem much info regarding Windows 7 sync center out there. Its got to be bugged in someway, as the majority of my conflicts seem to be that the file has been changed locally, and on the server, yet they exactly same timestamp and filesize.

We have our environment configured with roaming profiles and the Documents/Desktop and Favorites redirected to another network share (no DFS). We have no issues with Sync Center. That said, we did develop a Win 7 specific offline policy to address the changes in regards to how 7 operates compared to our previously configured offline XP policy.

It could potentially be something dfs related i guess if edusysadmin has no problem. I guess it could also depends how the user work. In our case they are generally remote and connect via VPN. However, what i'm finding to resolve conflicts is, when both files match (date & size) if you click to keep the server copy it actually resolved the conflict. If you select to keep the computer local cached version, the conflict remains. I feel this is probably a bug. I've also been testing KB977229 on a couple of machines, but have nothing to report as present on it. This contains an updated version of some of the offline files components, although obviously it doesn't really state anything specific to this particular. Could be worth trying see if it has any improvement in function.

i have a same problem here i think this problem because of the method of sync that 7 will sync the files in background, different with xp that we have to log off/in first. in gpedit i found "configure background sync" and was thinking the issue will be resolve by this policy, but there is parameter that i dont understand about the purpose which is sync variance

I agree the Windows 7 Offline Files synching needs attention. It doesn't work right. I have people that only log in to one Windows 7 client and have offline files for their My Document files stored on a single server. Very basic setup. Almost every single client I've moved to Windows 7 has synch conflicts and errors. I use USMT to migrate user data and I'm not 100% sure if it migrates Offline files by default. If it does then ok I can understand how there could be conflicts right off the bat. If it doesn't then I just don't get it. How can there be conflicts on a first time synch? If I clear up the conflicts they just come back. It's telling me files have changed that I know for a fact have not changed at all and they certainly haven't changed on both the server and the client where it would create a conflict during synch. I'd like to tell people when I set them up that the status they want to see is a check mark and not a red x or caution sign. I have a hard time telling them that when the "normal" behavior for it is to have a problem.

same issue here, server 2008 R2, windows 7 enterprise clients (desktop and laptops). user profile folder are setup for snycing. Some computers display errors some do not. when users go home I keep getting calls that they cannot access their files and they have a red x on them!. On the problem computers i get snyc error wfcwin32.log (the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process). But i think thats just related to a citrix xen app some clients have installed.
